Devyn Morneheure is a human slave, kept in a castle of a harsh king of Ieslal on the motherland Asna. Sold there two years prior, she works off her adoptive father's debt by scrubbing walls and floors, shoeing horses, polishing knobs, and being forced to live in squalor. She has no family for she was an orphan before she was dumped on the steps of Lord Tworidge's home. Unable to escape, she accepts her fate and lives her life on as a slave.

Cassius is a torn Brolsan, creatures resembling humans but far stronger and greater in skill and magic. He's very powerful but has outlawed magic in his kingdom due to his father going mad with an illness that only affects the most influential in magic. No one speaks to him unless they are spoken to, not even the royals of his court. He wears a mask to conceal the scars given to him by his late, sick father and no one is allowed behind it unless they are forced. Not until a human girl with violet eyes seems to have dark forces after her.

Brother-in-law to the king was not something Lord Toros wanted. Sure, he impregnated the king's sister but that was not enough. He wanted more wealth, more land, more power and to do that, he must turn away from the light and focus on Shadow Magic, a deep and terrible force that could possibly destroy the people of Asna, human or non-human, in a way deemed detrimental.
