Dreamscape

I opened the door and I had no idea where I was. The sky was still blue, the grass was still green, but the whole landscape spoke of some kind of magic. The clouds were fluffy, a pleasant pink color and the sun was a perfect yellow circle.

The air was full of bird-song, the breeze was gentle and warm. Cats lazed in the sunshine while kittens and puppies played friendly games of chase. I pulled the door closed behind me and strolled towards the bench that had appeared on my lawn. I took a seat and, almost instantly, a cat settled on my lap while another curled up beside me. Soon the bird-song was accompanied by the sound of gentle purring.

It was so warm......I felt so peaceful. I had allowed my eyes to close.

I woke to the sound of waves gently lapping on to a beach. Waves! I do not live anywhere near the sea, but there it was, right at the bottom of the garden. Seagulls were calling as they wheeled and soared up in the sky.

Then I had heard you. You were down by the beach, not far from me, and you were waving, calling out my name. I had picked up the snoozing cat and placed it back down on the bench. It opened its eyes to stare sleepily at me then settled back to sleep. I stood up, stretched, and walked towards you.

I was so pleased to see you there but I did not rush. I walked towards you at a leisurely pace. You were smiling at me and I could tell that I was smiling at you too. I had never before realised just how big my garden was.

Almost there I held out my hands towards you and you reached out to me too. But what happened – the sun had disappeared behind a cloud, the sky had turned to grey. The wind that had been warm and gentle had now become a cold and vicious gale.

Behind you I could see that the waves had been turned to towering, foaming, masses of water that were rapidly heading towards you. I know that I had called out a warning to you. But you had not moved, not taken even one step towards me.

I had screamed in horror as the waves had crashed against you, as you had disappeared beneath the torrent. But you did not stay gone. No, you had emerged from beneath that water but you were no longer yourself. In front of me then had stood someone so powerfully cruel, so heartless and cold. You had looked at me and had smiled an empty smile. The hand that you had stretched toward me was no longer human, but hooked, clawed; ready to grab and to never let go.

I had turned and ran from you, but it was not you that I was running from. It was a monster that had replaced you, that stood in your place. I could not pick up speed. My arms were pumping, my legs were stretching out in front of me but I was barely making any forward progress. Everything was now moving in slow motion, everything that is apart from the monster that had replaced you, that seemed to be impervious to the slowing down of time.

I could see my door. The cats had become rats. The kittens and puppies were now carrion crows and giant beetles. As I had made my way to my door they had turned and joined in with your pursuit. I had kicked out at them, time and time again.

Come on! Come on! I know I had tripped, fallen, I had banged my head. I had not allowed myself to lay there but had hauled myself back up on to my feet and had forced myself to keep going. I had stretched out my arm. I had reached out my hand and pushed that door open.....

I had woken up, in my own room, in my own bed. Shakily I had made my way to my bedroom window, opened it and there had been no sound of the sea. There were no rats, no crows, no cats, no kittens, no puppies.......And no you!

It had all been a dream. Or a nightmare.

But how can I explain the large bump that is already blackening into a bruise on my head, right where I had hit it as I ran?
