Three years after not seeing one of my best friends, I heard a knock on my door. I opened up the door and to my surprise I saw one of my high school best friends, Sam. I said to Sam, “How are you Sam, Ihave not seen you in three years.”

“I am not doing so good Jake,” replied Sam.

“Why not?” I said.

Sam exclaimed, “I’m in a situation right now… I do not have any money and my parents kicked me out of the house.”

I was strongly thinking what Sam said. I asked, “Well do you want to stay with me for a couple of days?”

“I was thinking you could help me out with my money issue,” said Sam.

“Sam you can’t just show up at my house and ask me for money,” I said. “Why don’t you ask your family for money?”

“Like I said Jake, my parents kicked me out and mostly all of my relatives passed away,” said Sam.

“Okay listen, you can stay here for 2 nights tops. I have a family of my own and my own bills to pay. If you want to stay here longer you’ll have to get a job any and pay $100 every 2 weeks. Sorry I am being a little bit boor right now, but I’m angry,” I said

Sam replied in shock, “Okay thank you, I will apply for a job tomorrow and pay my due.”

“Sounds good Sam, and don’t make a mess either,” I stated. Sam went to get a shower and I was just thinking in my mind. Was I too hard on him? When he got out of the shower and got dressed, I walked in the spare room and apologized.

“It’s no big deal Jake, I see where you’re coming from,” said Sam.

I called my wife while she was at work. I told her about Sam staying at our house for a couple of days, and she was cool with it.

She said, “as long as he doesn’t try to pull any tricks on us and keeps the house clean, he could stay.”

We talked for a little bit longer and she ended up hanging the phone up and getting back to work. I said to Sam, “I have to go pick up my daughter.”

He said, “Okay, where are you picking her up from?”

“School,” I replied

“Okay, see you soon,” said Sam

I got my daughter from school, and had to make a quick stop at the store. I bought cameras to install around the house so I know what Sam’s up to when me and my wife aren’t home.

When I got home I introduced Sam to my daughter.

“Sam this is Macy.”

“Say hi Macy,” I said

“Hello”, said Macy

“Hi, you’re so adorable,” replied Sam

Just as Sam said that my wife walked in the door.

“Sam, this is my wife, Rose,” I said

“Hello nice to meet you Rose,” said Sam

“Nice to meet you too,” Rose replied

“I’m going to lie down for a little bit,” stated Sam

“Okay,” I said. I started to enervate so I went to lie down also. The next morning I woke up and went to check on Sam but he was not in the room. I checked the living room. He was not in the living room either. I said to Rose, “did you see Sam leave?”

“I did not,” replied Rose.

Later on we heard a knock on the door. It was a police officer, he was holding Sam by the arm. I asked the officer what happened.

“He got in a fight by the 5th Ave. He tried picking a fight with a man that is dauntless,” said the cop.

“Why? Why would you do that Sam?”

“He tried stealing money off of me,” replied Sam.

“I thought you didn’t have any money. How did you get money Sam?”

“I had a little bit of money,” said Sam.

When the cop left we had a conversation with Sam. We said to Sam, “We can’t have cops coming to our house and random people showing up. This is the first warning in said, I love you like a bro but I have a family now.”

“I understand,” said Sam.

“Good, don’t think I’m being harsh on you,” I said. Later that night when everyone went to bed, I heard our door open. I walked downstairs and opened the door. Sam was standing on the porch smoking a cigarette. “What are you doing I said?”

“Smoking cigarettes helps me to not stress out,” he said.

“Okay well just don’t do it when my wife or daughter is around,” I said and walked back inside. I went back to bed for the night. Next morning when I woke I went to ask Sam if he wanted to go out to dinner with us but I could not find him. I searched the whole house. I knew he couldn’t be out shopping or something because he is ignoble right now. He did not have a phone either, so we had to stay home and wait till he got back. Finally after waiting two hours we heard our door open. Sam walked in, and sat on the couch. “Sam where have you been?” I asked.

“I went to my friend’s house a couple blocks away,” Sam replied.

“Why’d you ask to stay with us if you have a friend’s house you can stay at,” I asked?

“He is staying at his mom’s house right now, he doesn’t live here,” replied Sam.

I just ignored him and walked away. Ever since Sam came to stay with us everything has been a mess around our house and things do not feel the same for me and my family. I was considering asking Sam to leave but I knew he wouldn’t have anywhere else to go. A few weeks pass, I got a call. It was the police, they said that Sam has been shot. I paused for a second, I couldn’t believe what I heard. They told me that he is being rushed to our local hospital. I dropped the phone and got in my car. I went to the hospital. When I got there they were operating on Sam so I couldn’t go in and see him. After they were done I was able to. I walked into the room, at first Sam was asleep but then he woke up. He wasn’t really sure where he was though. I asked the doctor what happened.

“He got shot in the leg during a drug deal. He will be fine though,” said the doctor.

“Oh my, okay thanks doctor,” I replied. The suddenly I got another phone call. It was my wife. I picked up the phone and heard screaming.

“HELP ME, HELP ME, two guys are outside our house with shotguns,” screamed Rose.

I hurried up grabbed my coat and ran out of the hospital. I sped home as fast as I could. All I was thinking was thank god that we dropped our daughter off at my mom’s house. I pulled up to the driveway, I saw lights flickering inside the house. I tried not to enervate and keep my cool. I knew these guys were deleterious so I knew I was going to have to stop them. We did not have any guns at our house, so I knew I was going to have to use a different weapon. I creeped up the back porch very quietly without making a sound. I peeked in and saw sudden movement. It was a man wearing an all-black outfit and a mask. I slowly opened the door, and shut it. I grabbed a baseball bat sitting by the garage door. I heard a scream coming from upstairs. It was Rose, I hurried up the stairs fast but quiet, turned the corner and cracked the one guy in the head with the bat. The other guy turned around and pointed the shotgun at me.

“Stand still,” he shouted.

“Okay, chill out,” I replied. The other guy was knocked out on the ground right by my bedroom door.

“Toss the bat over here,” said the man in black.

I handed him the bat and while he bent down to pick it up, Rose kicked him in the head and he fell down. He dropped the gun and landed straight on his stomach. I picked the bat up and whacked him in the head again and also knocked him out. I felt very bestial after taking those two guys out. I called the cops and told them to come as soon as possible. They got to my house in a very ephemeral time. I had to explain to them what happened. When that was all said and done they cuffed the two men up took the away. I went back to the hospital to visit Sam. He wasn’t sleeping when I got there so I got to talk to him for a little while. “How are you feeling?” I said.

“I’m feeling fine for right now, I shouldn’t have been doing what I was doing,” he said

“I know, you should’ve been with us,” I said. As soon as I said that his eyes closed. He fell asleep on me.

6 weeks later…. Sam was cleared from the hospital. Ever since he was out our amity began to get closer. Sam has been 100% better. He has not randomly left and he has gone out to eat with us every time we went. He finally got a job and his life started to get back on track. While he and I were talking he said something that hit me pretty hard.

“Selling drugs was the only way I could afford anything, but now since I have a job my life is better. I feel like a new person now. If there was one lesson I’ve learned after these few years it is to do well in school, and go to college and get a good job. Hopefully one day I will be opulent,” he said.

Sam was being very candor with me. I started to tear up as he was saying this. “In school we were always the antithesis of each other and you were always the more popular friend. I was considered the nerd in our group. Being a nerd payed off for me. I have a nice house, nice family, nice job, and nice cars. It’s not always about being popular,” I said.

“Yeah I know, I guess that’s all I ever cared about. I should have cared more for school. I was always obsequious no matter what. I always tried showing off and tried acting cool.  I always tried being facetious so I would make people laugh but that got me nowhere in life,” he said.

When we finished our conversation Sam told me and Rose that he has found a cheap apartment to live in for now. We said we were proud of him for turning his life around. “Sorry for treating you like a son but I care for you Sam,” I said.

“Jake, if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be in this position right now. I would be on the streets asking for money. You basically saved my life.”

I walked up to him and gave him a hug. After that he said goodbye.

“We can still keep in touch and hang out sometimes when I come to visit town,” he said.

“For sure Sam, just let me know when you want to hook up. Maybe we can go out to dinner and catch up,” I said. Sam said his final goodbye to us.

“Thank you Jake, and Rose, for everything,” he said

“You’re welcome. Goodbye, Sam,” we said.
