There I sit with the most confusing hand to play in blackjack, a fifteen. Sweat running down my face as if there was a faucet on my forehead.

“Logan, stay don’t risk it!” Alex exclaimed in my ear as loud as a gunshot.

“Go for it, we can’t lose this or Ron…,” John said before Dan interrupted.

“We are running out of time, make a decision!” Dan screeched at the top of his voice. The dealer gave me stare which I knew he was growing impatient. I eagerly put down my finger to signal that I wanted another card. I prayed that it was not a seven or above. He slid me the card not knowing anything of our situation. I felt the card and flipped it.

After a six and a half hour flight from my hometown Richmond, I walk off the plane to see my friends waiting there. Ron the small skinny nerdy friend that helped us with college homework, John the big man of the group, Dan my roommate from college, and Alex my dorm neighbor. We all went to UVA together and never lost touch with each other. After all the hellos we walked out of the airport. When we reached the exit I looked at my watch.

“Midnight, time to hit the hay,” I said this as I waved to a taxi to get to the hotel. Once we got there we checked into our fancy Vegas hotel. We made our way to the hotel, it was covered with brilliant marble, quarts, and many beautiful minerals. I went up to the counter see a lovely young women who was named Sarah. She was a tallish burnet with a hotel uniform on. She had a name tag that read “Hello my name is Sarah”

“Hello, ummm Sarah. We are here to check in,” I said with bag under my eyes.

“Okay I will set you up,” she snarled.

I noticed that she had a blood stain on her sleeve. I thought maybe she had a little accident and nothing really more.

“Here you go,” she said handing us the cards.

We said our thanks and we exited the lobby. Tired, we hurried to get to our rooms and fall into a deep sleep. As I approached my door, I felt like I was being watched as if I was prey. It’s just in my brain I thought to myself. I ignored this but locked the door just in case. I headed towards my bed filled of linen sheets that look they are made for royalty. Satisfied I closed my eyes waiting for my brain to shut off. We all went to bed knowing tomorrow would be filled with gambling and partying.

The next day, I woke up with the sun in my window so I knew I had slept quite a while. I didn’t know a guy’s get together would be so luxurious. As I thought this I heard a knock at the door. So I put on my clothes.

“Just a minute!” I said scurrying to pull up my jeans.

I finally opened the door. To my surprise no one was there except a small box that looked like a present.  Red with a yellow ribbon tied around it. I closed the door and set the box down just thinking it was a complimentary gift from the hotel. So I got a shower and went down to the complimentary breakfast with Dan, Alex, and John. For some odd reason Ron wasn’t at breakfast, so we all thought he was still sleeping.

“Silly Ron is always sleeping” Alex Proclaimed.

Nodding my head, I agreed as I stuffed a piece of French toast into my mouth. When we were done we all went to wake up Ron from his deep sleep. When we got to his room we didn’t notice much, except when we knocked no one answered.

“I’ll call him,” said Alex pulling out his phone from the back pocket of his jeans.

When Alex called him there was about 5 seconds of ringing and then someone had picked up.

“Hello…. Hello…Ron are you there?” Alex impatiently spoke in into the phone.

The all of the sudden there was breathing, but not of Ron’s. It sounded more of a child or women. After several seconds of more breathing, there was a voice.

The voice was of a women’s and it spoke, “Check the box”.

She hung up the phone. I knew exactly what she was talking about, but my friends stood there in a quandary.

“What the heck was that about?” Dan spoke out as he was whipping off his glasses

“I know exactly what she meant,” I said shouting as I wave for them to follow me.

We got to my room and opened the door and still laying where I had left it, was the red box with the yellow ribbon wrapped around it.

“What is it?” John said

“It was at my door this morning and so I set it here and went to breakfast,” I explained.

“What are we waiting for Logan?” Alex exclaimed.

“Nothing,” I said as I grabbed the box

I untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. I saw a green sticky note and something under it that I couldn’t quite see yet. I lifted up the sticky note and saw an awful sight. A finger. It was probably Ron’s.

“Oh my god!” screamed everyone in the room as we freaked out.

I grabbed the note and shoved the box and the finger aside.

The note read, “I have your friend Ron, but you won’t get him back easy. You will need to complete some tasks. First you will need to get me two million dollars. Secondly you will call me and you will need to solve a series of riddles. If you do these tasks correctly, I will give you my location and exchange the money for your friend. You have 48 hours. If you call the cops… well it won’t be good. –XOXO Sarah.”

I read it out loud. Shocked we all stood there waiting for someone to say something.

“Why Ron?” Alex questioned.

“Someone knew we were here and wants money, but for what reason?” John said.

“Wait. Sarah… I know that name,” I said trying to think who it was.

Then it came to me.

“The employee from last night as the desk!” I yelped

“We have to make sure before we make any decisions.” Alex spoke out.

I nodded my head giving the ok.  So we started to head to the lobby until I saw Dan having a panic attack.

“Are you ok?” I asked.

“How are we going to get two million dollars Logan?” Dan questioned.

“Don’t worry we will find a way,” I said actually wondering the same thing.

“Now C’mon” I said as we ran down the hallway like children.

We showed up to the desk of the giant hotel.

Out of breath, I asked a man at the desk, “Excuse me, is there a Sarah working here today?”

“I’m sorry but Sarah was murdered probably by a boor. Her body was found three days ago,”

I stood there in silence not knowing what to say.

“Well is their another Sarah that works here?” I asked.

“No, I’m sorry I can’t help,” he exclaimed.

Not saying anything I walked towards the doors. My friends followed, but wondered what I was doing.

Once we got outside to see the city of Vegas I said “Boys do you know where we are?”

They all gave me a weird look.

“We are in Vegas, and do you know what’s in Vegas?

“What?” they all asked.

“CASINOS!” I screamed at them.

“He is right we need to get money fast if we want to save Ron.” John agreed.

So we gathered as much cash as we could out of our banks, but by the time the very long process was done it was 11pm. We agreed to get rest and get ready for the day that decided if someone should live or die. Believe me we slept with our doors locked that night.

The next morning I woke up to my cell phone ringing. I didn’t pause to answer. Immediately I heard something that gave me some hope.

I heard Ron’s voice say, “twenty-four hours Logan please hurry”.

The phone hung up. When it did I had notices the time on my phone, two pm. We had overslept on the worst day possible. I hopped up immediately got dressed and got the gang up. We grabbed our cash and headed towards the nearest casino. As we arrived at the humongous casino/hotel we read the sign. It said “Caesars Palace”

“What game should we play?” Dan asked

“I know just the game,” I said with a grin on my face.

Dauntlessly I paced through the crowd of people, trying to find to a find a free table. Being the antithesis of calm I spotted one.

“Blackjack,” I snarled to my friends.

“Ok but how should we do this, we are wasting precious time?” John spoke out.

“Well we have about one million dollars together. So I say we go all in,” Dan said

“Are you crazy?’ Alex said.

“Wait, he might be on to something. We are running out of time and we need money fast,” I said

“I agree, go big or go home,” John said.

“I will play,” I said

They all nodded their heads in agreement. I took a seat the table and handed the dealer the money.

“Holy crap, did you win the lottery or something?” the dealer said as he looked like he has seen a ghost.

I stayed silent until I got my chips. I bet all the money we had. The man slid me two cards.

“We need to hurry up and win this,” John said to me.

I nodded my head and looked at my cards. There I sit with the most confusing hand to play in blackjack, a fifteen. Sweat running down my face as if there was a faucet on my fore head.

I felt the deleterious card and flipped it.

There is lay, in this moment is was the opposite of ephemeral. I expected this card to enervate me, but it actually was the highlight of my vacation. It was a six.

We Screamed in happiness like never before, but the dealer needed to bust or get lower than twenty-one.

“I can’t believe it!” Dan was screaming and you jumped in happiness.

The dealer started with a twelve overall. He hit and a queen showed up.

“Bust!” Dan yelled at the dealer being facetious.

We had just gotten two million enough to save Ron, but we still needed to solve the riddles.

“Calm down Dan,” Alex said laughing.

“How are we supposed to contact that fake Sarah girl?” I asked.

As soon as I said this my cell phone starting ringing. I answered the call.

She said, “Good job getting my money. Now you have to solve have to solve…I’ll take it easy on you and give you one. If you solve this riddle I will give my location.”

“Ok,” I responded.

“Alright, what loses it head in the morning and get back at night?” She snarled to the phone giggling at the same time.

My friends were questioning what she was saying to me.

“We quiet!” I whispered in a sharp tone.

I kept thinking and thinking and then it came to me.

“A pillow!” I shouted into the phone.

“Good job Logan, you are very opulent when it comes to riddles. Now come to 543 Oakwood Drive with my money. Bye,” She said this and then hung up.

“I know where she is let’s go,” I said with confidence that we were going to save him.

We hustled out of the casino filled with cops with aegis’s and lots of people. When we got outside we fervently screamed for a taxi. Finally someone with amity let us get in their cab. It was about a ten minute drive but I noticed that we all look like carrions. We were all so exhausted from our ignoble stay here in Vegas

When we arrived we knocked at the door. The woman opened it up and we could see Ron. He was missing his left pinky and he looked like crap.

“Where’s the money?” she said

I waved the bag of money in my hand.

“Let’s exchange and get on our way,” I said eagerly

“Ok Logan no need to the attitude,” She snarled

I handed her the money and she threw Ron at us. Once she had done this John took the opportunity and tackled her. She was knocked out cold.

“Holy cow John,” Ron said with a smile on his face.

We a laughed and hurried to leave with our money. After we had cleared the sight we had left an  anonymous tip to the police. We ran Ron to the hospital to his finger, but he was ok.

We headed straight to the airport and got on the earliest flight.

“Thanks guys for helping me,” Ron said

“That’s what friends are for,” I said

We all agreed.

“Flight 675 to Richmond now boarding,” The loud speaker shouted.

We all got up and walked towards the gate knowing it was over.
