Like Quicksand

The path is very narrow

when you’re in need of solid land,

for waiting either side of you

is that kind of lethal sand.

Just lose your way a little bit,

make that single blunder --

it’s really not forgiving

and will quickly pull you under.

At first that sinking’s very slow,

perhaps reaching to your knee

but with no one there to help you out

it is the end that you do see.

You put up a token struggle

but your efforts are so weak --

maybe this is offering

the escape you surely seek.

It’s sucking you down much faster now,

it has climbed above your waist,

you still are kind of floundering

which just speeds up the pace.

Around your neck it circles,

it is underneath your chin,

your tears are falling thick and fast

as you finally give in.

A kind of resignation hits

when it is covering your head,

no one held out a hand to you

and now they’ve left you dead.

But you know that you are not alone,

you’ll soon be meeting me,

the uncared for and forgotten

but now at least we’re free.
