Conflict/Suspense Story
By Alex Chang

She seemed like such a sweet old lady. Who would ever believe that she was really…

Whenever I walked past the soggy lake, I would always be greeted by a nice old lady who fed the ducks. The lady must have been 60 years old, because she looked old! She dressed very conservatively and greeted everyone with a honest smile. Whenever I had trouble with my history homework she would be the first person I asked, because she was ancient, and she claimed to have rode dinosaurs. She had mental problems. But the old lady, being such a nice old lady, who would ever believe that she was wanted dead by her own family.
I would have never know if I wasn’t there that day. The blue sky was consumed with darkness, and thundering gray clouds rolled across the sky. On my way back from school, I ran past the soggy lake and saw a horrific scene. A bunch of men approached the old lady, and handed her a yellow envelope. The old lady fell to the ground petrified.
“How could they do this to me!”
I hid in a bush, too frightened to walk past the scene. One of the men put his hand in his pocket and was about to grab something. It must have been a gun, but I didn’t know. I was about to wet myself watching the cruel killing of an old lady, so I quickly ran past the bunch of men as fast as I could.
I didn’t remember anything that happened, because when I woke up I was in my bed, and told that I had fainted on the doorsteps. It must have been a dream.
A week after the incident I passed through soggy lake, and everything seemed perfectly normal. I decided to pay a visit to old lady at her creepy looking house that night. I rang the doorbell and heard the chimes and no one answered the door. It was strange, because old lady never left home after 6 pm. I was curious to see if the old lady was actually still alive after that terrifying encounter. The lights were still on and I heard no noise. I went back the next morning and I saw that the lights were still on, but no answer at the doorbell. Day after day, I would pass through the lake and see the lights in the house. I decided that I would break into the house to see what happened. I went in the dark of night 3 AM, not even old people woke up this early. I brought with me a big branch that I found on my lawn, and used it to smash the window.
The sound of glass shattering was softer than expected. I rushed into the well lit house and looked around. Quietly I went into her bedroom, to see what was going on, and I was paralyzed with shock when I saw.
In her room, “ it was a place with no darkness”. Every corner of the room was lit, even the closets were illuminating. Glow in the dark toys that were scattered along the floor weren’t even on. They lady was sitting on the ground gripping her knees like no tomorrow. Her eye bags were identical to those of giant plastic bags. Her pupils were dilated and blood red, I almost mistook her for a vampire. Gallons of coffee and tea, caffeine of all kinds were plied next to her.
“No, please, NO!” She gripped in her hand a living will, and a 1,000,000 dollar life insurance form. The lady had forced herself to become insomniac. She didn’t want to blink.
I went to approach her and asked her some questions, but once I got as close to 2 feet next to her, she pulled out a sharp, machete, and a glock. “ GET BACK”
I got out of the room as fast I could get out. My breath grew heavy. I remembered the deadly look she had gaze, and goosebumps ran down my spine like torrent.

It made sense. The meeting, the insurance, the will. Her family must have sent people to kill her, and get the money. I never knew that she was so rich, perhaps I should have asked for some. That explained her insomnia.
After I went home I looked into her family and gave them a call. I wanted to get in on the money. I found out that the lady was actually the owner of logitech, and owned millions of shares in other very profitable businesses.
“Hello? Ms. Darell?”
“This is she”
“ I want in on the old Ms Darrell's will.”\
“Who is this”
“A witness, at the soggy lake scene”
“How much?”
How much? That was a heavy question. How much did I want? I didn’t want to ask for too much and get myself killed.
“2000$”
“OK”
Days later I got a call from the Darrell’s saying that the lady had passed. In the end there was no murder, no mercenaries, and no bloodshed. She had died from lack of sleep, and money was split among the family, and I got my share.
Never trust anyone when you have everything, you will lose it all in the worst way.
