Converting Compass Notations.

To convert a Quadrantal Notation to a Three-Figure Notation, if the quadrantal course or bearing is between North and East, simply add the zero, 0,  prefix

South and East, subtract from 180°, South and West, add 180°, North and West, subtract from 360°.

 As in the following examples:-

Quadrantal ................Three-Figure

N72°E .............................072°

SS4°E .............................126°

S27°W ............................ 207°

°

………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

To convert a Three-Figure course or bearing to Quadrantal Notation, if the Three-Figure notation is between  091° and 180°, subtract from 180° and add S and E

181° and 270°, subtract 180° and add 5 and W 271° and 360°, subtract from 360° and add N and W, as in the following examples:

057° = N57°E

100° = 580°E

190° = 510°w

300° = N60°W

In converting between Points Notation and Three-Figure Notation, the following facts should be borne in mind.

N'= 000°, or 360°

NE = 045°

E = 090°

SE = 135°

S = 180°

SW = 225°

W = 270°

NW = 315°

………………

1 point = 11%°

2 points = 22%°

3 points = 33%°

4 points = 45 %°

5 points = 56%°

6 points 67%°

7 points = 78%°

8 points = 90%°

In example, conversion of WNW in Points Notation to Three-Figure Notation would be done as follows:-

WNW lies 2 points to the right of W (270°)

WNW = 270° + 22 1/2°  = 292 1/2°

Similarly, conversion of SE x E to Three-Figure Notation would be:

SE x E lies 1 point to the left of SE, 135°.

SE x E = 135° - 11%° = 123%°

The conversion of 214° in Three Figure Notation to Points Notation is done by reference to the nearest known point, which in this case is 225° = SW.

Subtracting 214° from 225° leaves 11° which is almost 1 point, so 214° is one point to the left of SW, that is SW x S.
