After watching the political landscape unfold over the last four weeks I have decided it's time to get a gun to protect my constitutional rights.

I've always been a moderate person. I've voted for both Republicans and Democrats in national and local elections and prefer to go with the person as opposed to the party. In terms of my outlook, I tend to be somewhat socially liberal and fiscally conservative. I'm probably somewhat libertarian as I don't believe the government has a right to my money or to control what I do in the privacy of my own home or body.

Gun control is not something I thought about that much. I probably thought owning a gun was fine but that needing a semi-automatic weapon a bit more than necessary. After all, what is someone going to do with a semi-automatic weapon? It wouldn't help against a military assault.

With the election of Donald Trump and the prominence of some of his alt-right supporters though, I have changed my mind. Donald Trump is proving himself to be against the U.S. Constitution. He has bashed the freedom of the press, has threatened to ignore election results, and is beholden to his own businesses, which he refuses to divest and provide transparency into. His instincts are dictadorial and he has even threatened violence if his cabinet appointees are not confirmed.

In Germany, the NAZIs rose to power because they had the brawn to force their way into total control. The communists and social democrats didn't have the weaponry or the manpower to resist the NAZI takeover.

It's no secret that those on the far right in the U.S. have been stockpiling weapons for years, in anticipation of doing away with the constitution and implementing a dictatorship. Trump may be the first piece of this plan and that is why he has garnered the enthusiastic support of so many on the far-right.

Democracy only stands if patriots are brave enough to protect it. Those of you who advocate gun control have disarmed yourself for what could be a rocky couple of years. I suggest you reconsider so that if there is an attempt to overthrow the Constitution, you are ready to defend it. Otherwise, your worries about children getting shot by guns will pale in comparison to living in a right wing, fascist dictatorship.
