Mockery

Please don’t make a mockery, don’t make a joke of me,

don’t make it seem like I am someone you don’t even see.

You’ll talk about me between yourselves as if I am not there,

the words you say can hurt so much but you don’t even care.

You treat me like an idiot, like I’m some kind of fool --

maybe you don’t realise that you are being cruel;

the words that you are saying batter me just like thrown rocks,

that you would voice these words, that is the thing that gives most shocks.

How did I become so powerless, with so little confidence,

each time that you all put me down just adds to many dents.

Maybe one day you will manage just to feel a slight respect

instead of making me so conscious that I’m just a life reject.

The mocking and the banter are things with which I just can’t cope,

I’m building my defences as a barrier to your scope

of bitter criticism, of your ways to put me in my place

and to make sure that you never see the tears upon my face.
