What was popular in the world of women's fashion back in the year 1996? It was a year filled with new trends far different from what we saw in the years 1990-1995.

The year 1996 was a complete new world in terms of fashion for women.  It became more colorful and playful and it actually revisited a decade (the 1970s) but in a new hip way.  This isn't to say that other decades hadn't been revisited before-some 1940s elements actually came back in the early 1990s, for example).

Among the most visible trend to come out of 1996 was the bell bottom pant.  What? Yes, the bell bottoms and they were everywhere; this was a trend that would continue into the next year or two. You could pair them with the new "Retro" shirt.  They came in a variety of colors and prints.  They usually had the bat-wing collar and buttoned down.  They were made of a farbric that was probably polyester and was slightly stretchy but not completely.

Popular in 1996 were fruit prints, such as oranges and apples as well as paisley.  They were usually in some bold color such as orange, pink or lime.  Does anyone remember the smiley face?  First made popular in the 1970s, the smiley face came back and was seen on key chains and the so-called baby-T.

What else was popular in 1996?  Fashion magazines advertised leisure suits (I kid you not), vinyl jackets, sheaths, velour, jumpsuits (Eek!), laminated denim (huh?), lucite rings, halters, overalls, and colored nails (blue was very popular).

For a look at 1996 style watch the films "The Craft" and "Scream".
