Why Gender is still an issue??

Oh you give birth to a male child?? A big congratulation, first child and a son!! uhh It’s not just my experience it happens to many more women in the society. Why is gender still an issue? Is gender becoming just one factor among many that divides society, or is it the main division?  In our society, a male child is more important than a female child. There is a belief that the son retains the father’s name, and his children will have the same last name. If a family only has a daughter, the family name will die out. Also, a son can be an heir to the father. People think that a daughter cannot do this.

One of my friends mentioned, why we have to hear a lot just because you give birth to a daughter? Now the question lies, is she only responsible for giving the birth to a daughter. Biologically there is no role of women to determine the sex of child. However, patriarchal society blames the women for not giving birth of male child. Many girls and women in our society are tortured just because they give birth to a daughter.

That is ridiculous, how can one child be more important than another? In our society it is obligatory religious duty of son to look after their aged parents and provide with their decent means of living but these days aged people are increasingly suffering from problems of separation, loneliness and their children indifference and neglect.

Nowadays many families desire for baby girl. A baby girl today is welcomed happily. There are some examples in our society that some couple never wanted more than one child and they had a daughter. These days’ daughters are increasingly picking up the cultural responsibilities of a son.

When will our society understand that we all are equally unique? There is no better or worse. There are just differences in abilities of man and a woman. However, in general we need each other. It takes both males and females to create life so both are needed equally in society. All children are a blessing and a gift from god to be grateful for.
