Poetry To Me

I’m really not familiar with the rules of poetry,

they do not make much sense and are a mystery to me.

All this talk of stanzas, meter and poetic form

sort of brings to me a stupor where I can’t suppress a yawn.

I think of poetry as a type of writing that is free,

I’ll type it out and read it back as a way for me to see

if it flows smoothly, or maybe check that there’s some rhyme;

but perhaps it’s a short, sharp kick that I am aiming for this time.

The poems that I like to read are ones that make some sense,

not ones that sort of meander round and leave me feeling dense

because I’ve got lost in words as they spiral off and bend around

leaving me feeling empty when no real meaning I have found.

I like a message that pops out, that’s clear and understood,

with humour, passion, deepness or a story that is good;

but if it’s too fluffed up and flowery I’ll never get the feel

that the poetry I’m reading is in any way quite real.

There needn’t be a rhyme, or a rhythm that stays true --

the option to just chop-and-change should be up to you.

I guess it’s so subjective and that what appeals to one

could seem like utter rubbish to others when all is said and done.

A freedom of express myself is a necessity,

not constraints I have to fit in – no, ‘pure poetry’’s not for me.
