"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray..."
Damien half-listened as his older brother sang quietly under his breath whilst browsing around a shelf of books. Declan was a strange person, in Damien's eyes. He was... optimistic. Which was an understatement, really. Declan would take a bad situation and seemingly magically turn it around.
It was safe to say Damien was the exact opposite. Where his brother was cheerful and outgoing, Damien hid in the darkness and shadows.
Some months later, Declan suddenly fell ill. It was unexpected, especially since he wasn't one prone to sickness. Their mother liked to joke that he chased away diseases with his happiness.
With a worryingly high fever, Declan was confined to his bed, not that he could move much anyway. Damien overheard their mother and father conversing in low tones over whether or not to send him to the hospital. It was decided they would see if he got any worse.
Later, he followed his mother into Declan's room.
"Mom, you know I hardly get sick, right? I'm gonna be okay soon," Declan was saying.
"I know, honey." She gently placed a wet cloth over her eldest son's closed eyes. She kissed his forehead and turned to address Damien. "He needs to rest, sweetheart. Short visit, okay?" She ruffled his hair before leaving the room.
Damien sat cross-legged by his sick brother's bed. Declan looked uncharacteristically small and fragile under the covers. After a short silence, he said, "Hey, Dami?"
A short pause. "Did you turn off the lights?"
"No. This towel is covering your eyes." Damien carefully pushed the cloth up away from his eyes.
Declan's eyes opened to reveal a slightly clouded green. "Ah! Silly me!" He smiled a little. "Y'know, I'd feel better if someone sang to me."
"Do not be silly, Declan. Songs will not cure your fever."
"It won't," he conceded. "But it'll definitely make this pain bearable." Then he winced a little, and murmured, "I think I gotta sleep. My head's spinning... good night, Damien."
Damien rested his head on his arms as he watched the green eyes close and breathing even out. He watched his flushed face and quietly prayed he'll be okay.
Unbeknownst to Damien, their mother was walking past the bedroom at that moment. She stopped in surprise when she heard soft singing that wasn't Declan's.
"You never know dear... how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away..."
