Be careful of a strange stone on the floor. It may lead you to unexpected situation.

Fire Stone

My name is Fred. I live with my elder sister, Karen. As for my parents, they died in a car accident two years ago, when I was thirteen.

I have nothing to do today. I’ve been sitting on my bed staring at the photograph of my family in my hands. A man in the photograph is wearing a white shirt and black trousers. He has short fair hair and a little beard. He looks young and handsome, although he is nearly fifty. A woman who is standing beside him is wearing a pink dress. She has short black hair. In my opinion, she is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. They both are grinning widely and have their arms around two children, a 10-year-old girl with long curly black hair and a 5-year-old boy with short black hair. The boy is me and the other is Karen. I know I can’t be held in my parents’ arms anymore. They have gone now. They will not come back. But my sister is still here with me, still alive. I will not let her die and leave me alone.

I insert the photograph in my wallet and go down the stair to the first floor. I enter to the living room in which Karen has been reading a book. Today, she is wearing a white dress. Her hair is tied into a pony tail. She takes her eyes off the book and asks me “Where are you going?”

“I will get some fresh air in the park. Do you want to come with me?”

“I am waiting for Mike.” She says whilst blushing. I smile and walk out of the front door. Mike is Karen’s boyfriend. He is such a gorgeous man, tall, short fair hair, blue eyes and he takes a good care of my sister. I think he is such a perfect man.

I walk past the supermarket, grocery, coffee shop and then reach the park. I stroll around until I find a wooden bench. I walk toward it so that I can sit there, but something happen before I reach the bench.

A bright red flash hits my eyes. It is so bright that I can’t see anything. I squint my eyes to find from which direction it’s coming, but then the flash vanishes. I glance around and see something on the floor, so I pick it up and hold it in my right hand. It looks like a stone, but there is a sculpture of fire in the middle of it and I can feel the heat in my right hand as if it is burning.

Suddenly, my sight blurs and I lose my balance. I feel like I’m going to faint. I also feel something run through my body. So I throw the strange stone away and sit on the bench until I feel better, then go home.

The strange thing that happened today swims in my head all night and all the following day. I can’t remember what the teachers taught me. After finishing class, I walk home with strange feeling, like something has run through my body all the time. When I reach home, the thought of the stone vanishes immediately because something else shocks me. The fence around my house is damaged, the front door is open wide and the window is broken. A terrible fear runs up my spine. I run hurriedly into my house. I am met with a sight that shocks me; everything is scattered on the floor, the television is broken into two pieces. I call my sister’s name, but there is no response. My heart races as I frantically run up and down the stairs. I can’t find her. I call her name again and again, there is still no response. I pull my cell phone out of my bag and dial her number. I hear the phone ring from somewhere. I look around and find it on the floor. It’s Karen’s cell phone, lying beside is a small note that says ‘Park’. It’s a short note but I can guess that the person who wrote it wants me to go to the park. I don’t know what I ought to do. I don’t know how many people they are.

Karen’s cell phone rings again. I pick it up and look at the name shown on the screen. It’s Mike, So I answer it immediately in a shaky voice.

“What happened, Fred?” He asks “What happen to Karen? I’ve tried to call her many times but she hasn’t answered me.”

“I don’t know what happened. When I reached home, I saw the door has been forced open and everything in my house was scattered on the floor. I haven’t seen her. I saw only a note on the floor that says ‘Park’. I think she has been abducted. ”

“Abducted!” He cries out “Wait for me. I will reach your home in five minutes”

I wait for him for a while, but it seems forever. When he reaches me, we hurry to the park. The park is completely silent. There are no people. It’s very strange. I turn to Mike but he isn’t there. My heart beats faster. I remember that he was following me and we just spoke to each other a few seconds ago, but he has disappeared now. It’s impossible. Suddenly, everything turns dark. I can see nothing but I still keep walking. And then I see the outline of two people. It’s so dim that I can’t see what they look like.

“I have been waiting for you, boy” One of them says in a low voice.

“Where is my sister?” I quickly ask them even though I know I can’t expect them to answer.

“Where is my sister?!” I ask louder trying to control my voice so that it doesn’t shake. I feel something running through my body. I don’t know what it is.

Suddenly, there is a fire blowing up out of the ground around us. The light from the fire makes me see the people clearly, which makes my jaw drop. I can’t say that they are human. I don’t know what kind of creature I’m facing up to. They look like humans, but with pale skin, dark blank eyes, sharp nails and sharp teeth.

“Did you see? He can make it. He’s touched the Fire Stone and he can make it.” The smaller one talks to the other in a sharp voice.

“It’s your fault.” The bigger one whispers “You are so careless that accidentally drop the stone and let him touch it. We have to kill him before he can control the power.

They don't know I can hear what they said. I slowly step backwards.

“You can’t escape from this place, boy. Give us the Stone now!” The bigger one shouts. It pulls a sword, about 2-meter length, from its sheath and swings the sword at me. I avoid it in time but fall down on the ground.

"The stone isn't with me. I throw it away after I pick it up" I try to explain.

"I don't believe you!" It shouts at me.

"I told you the truth! and I don't even how to control that Stone" My heart is now sinking. I don't want to die!

"We will destroy your planet after I kill you and take the Stone back" It sneers and points the spike of the sword to my throat. I can see the sword glows under the moonlight. I raise my hands up even though I know they can’t protect me from the sword. But before my head can be cut off, something I don’t expect happens.

A ball of fire explodes from my hands and hits the bigger creature, which make it float away and hit the smaller one. They are now 10-feet-away. I hurry to get up of the ground. I have already realized that the stone I touched yesterday is the Fire Stone and it has given me a special ability. I can make fire. But now, I have to know how to control it. I don’t have much time.

I close my eyes, regulate my breathing and open my eyes again. I see them walking toward me. So I expel my power from my stomach. The fire runs from my hands toward them. They groan as the fire burns them.

“Yelp!” I yell and start to look for Karen. I hope she is still alive.

Everything is so dim that it’s hard to find her, so I light a little fire in my hand to help me see the way. I stumble over something on the floor. I look at it and find that it’s the Fire Stone. I pick it up and look around, I find myself standing in the area that I came to yesterday.

“Fred” I hear someone call my name. It’s a familiar voice. So I turn the way it came from and I see Karen. She is sitting on the bench with her hands tied together. I quickly run toward her and untie her hands. The tears streams down on her cheeks. I hug her tightly and look at her beautiful blue eyes.

“Don’t cry. You are safe now” I say and hold her hand.

“Where are you going?” A low voice comes from behind me. “You two can’t leave this place as long as I still live”

I turn back and see the alien standing beside the oak tree with its hand holding the sword. There are a lot of gashes on its skin. It’s the bigger one. I don’t see the other.

I hold the gem in my right hand and the alien sees it.

“Give it to me.” It orders in a shaky voice, which makes me know it’s worried. So I clench the gem tighter and expel the heat from my hand to the gem.

“Give it to me!” It says louder. Its voice is still shaky. "You will destroy us and the..."

It suddenly keeps its mouth shut when realizing that it makes a big mistake. However, it’s too late.

“How stupid you are to tell your secret to your enemy.” I say “I think I heard you and your friend plan to destroy my planet. Don’t expect me to pity you?”

I expel the heat more and more until the gem blows up into many piece. The alien groans and turns into the heap of ash. Suddenly, the darkness is gone and everything returns to normal as if nothing had happened. I can see other people in the park, and then I see Mike running toward us.

“Where were you, Fred?” He ask “You vanished while I was talking to you”

Then he turns to Karen. She has stopped crying already. “How about you?  What happened? Can you tell me? And what about the criminal?” He asks so fast that there’s no space for her to answer him.

“I will tell you when we reach home” I tell him and walk faster so that we don’t get home too late.

I don’t feel anything run through my body anymore. Maybe the special ability that I was given has gone since the gem was destroyed. I hope doesn’t come back. I prefer to be a normal boy.
