Georgina Walker was one of those people that simply exuded confidence. From the moment she pulled into town in her shiny BMW, from the moment she signed a lease on one of the most exclusive apartments, she became someone that the people wanted to know.

And she wanted to know them back......so long as they were the right sort of people. If you were wealthy, influential, wielded any sort of power then she would be happy to spend time with you, although she would never actively seek out your company. If you didn’t have the right influence or a high enough bank balance then forget it; she would not even notice you.

Always impeccably dressed, she shunned fashion. She knew what suited her, what gave off the correct image. Her make-up would be perfectly understated and her hair, cut in a simple style, was always neatly in place. Georgina never wore jewellery of any sort, apart from a slim and stylish watch around her wrist.

Invitations to parties, to dinners, just seemed to fly her way. Everybody who was anybody wanted her attendance at any and every event. And she would generally oblige. If two events were to occur on the same date she would make a quick appearance at the one she deemed to be less important, then would depart to arrive for the main one after making her excuses. Georgina never arrived on time, favouring the ‘fashionably late’ approach.

If you should watch her at these social gathering you would see a master at work. She would have people gathering around her, entertaining her with their life stories, their aspirations. She would laugh in all the right places in just the right way; she would be shocked, encouraging, sympathetic. But what she would not do is tell anything about herself. Nobody knew where she came from, nobody knew what she did. Georgina Walker was a completely closed book, her own story heavily guarded. And not one person realized this fact.

Then there was the investment. Only small amounts here and there, but for a new venture, or a short-term loan to cover expansion, forget the bank manager. Georgina would be far more forth-coming with the cash, and at much more favourable rates too. She would not insist on so many detailed plans either, trusting her ‘friends’ to know just what they were doing. The business people borrowed from her, the business people paid her back, both happily and on time.

When she herself came up with a scheme that required investment, how could they possibly say no. And who would want to? Georgina Walker was a woman that knew exactly what she was doing. She was sure to make a success of it, whatever IT was. Details were rather sketchy and nobody felt that they had the right to pry. She had shown her trust in them, after all. She was reliable and there was no chance of their investments being at risk at all.

But they were wrong. Georgina had approached every one of her contacts over the period of twenty four hours and she had done so in total secrecy. Everybody was competing for her approval and attention, and they each believed that they had been given a privilege when they were singled out. It wasn’t until a few days later that the truth emerged.

The day following her business discussions, Georgina vanished. There was no sign of her car, nobody entered her apartment until she had been gone a week and the lease ran out. When entry was gained it was as though nobody had ever been there. Every piece of furniture, every fixture and fitting was exactly as it had been a year previously.

Some people began to wonder if Georgina Walker had ever really existed. Perhaps she was merely a figment of their imagination. After all, how could such a perfect specimen of success and achieved ambition exist, let alone disappear as though in a puff of smoke.

The business people, the powerful and the influential knew that Georgina Walker had been real though. She had disappeared, taking their money, their savings and investment with her. They saw her for what she was – nothing more than a highly skilled conman, out for whatever she could get. And none of them wanted to admit quite how successful she had been at duping them.

Their money had vanished, was untraceable, unrecoverable. Why make things worse by involving the police, publicizing their foolishness to all and sundry? Better to cover it up, keep it hidden and accept their losses. To do otherwise would prove that they were nothing more than gullible fools.

Meanwhile, in another town in another state, Samantha Haigh arrives out of nowhere in her Mercedes, to lease one of the most luxurious apartments the town has to offer. She is immaculately turned out, exudes wealth and confidence, and is someone that the rich, the powerful and the influential want to get to know.
