There are two different kind of pilots, civilians and military. Civilians carry passengers and luggage on board. Military carry soldiers, missiles and bombs. Here we will talk about fighter pilots. To be more accurate about US Air Force pilots, or if your prefer elite pilots of the US Army. A bit of history would help you understand how US Army got to focus on aircrafts, and why US Air Force is so famous. Back to World War II, the domination of the sky is what gave the allies the final victory over German Nazis. On the ground, the Panzer (German tank) gave the Nazis the edge as the allies didn't have such tanks to oppose them. The answer came from the sky with the aircrafts, which literally destroyed the Panzer fleet. As the American bald eagle is the national bird of the United States of America. It makes sense why fighting falcons like the F-16 became the most famous and sold aircraft for more than 20 years. It was a symbol of US technological and air superiority, the "Star" of the US Army.

Tom is an US Air Force pilot. He is talented and a daredevil, like the aircraft he pilots, the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. For many years (since 1978) it dominated the skies, till the appearance of drones. Tom was used to competing with human rivals. First at the US Air Force Academy where he had to battle with "Val" (Kilmer) and his instructor "Kelly" (McGillis) to become a deserving pilot. Winning the respect from Val and the love of Kelly was what launched his brilliant career. Tom is so proud of himself, and the country is so proud of having world class pilots fighting for protecting the country. But what about protecting the country on the other side of the world in the Far East (Korea and Vietnam), or in the Middle East (Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria), which is also far away from home. Is it about protecting the country, or protecting the country interests? I think, protecting the country would be more about fighting to protect the boundaries from invasion. But maybe, Tom's country, for its domination over the rest of the world, confused the boundaries of the free world (democratic countries) with its own boundaries (US boundaries). They want to be leaders of the free world, and their interests and influence extend to the limits with the Communist Block and Arabic World. Interference in other countries affairs has been a trademark of their foreign politics. It was somehow illegal, but operating undercover or acting through non-governmental orgnizations (NGO) made it possible.

"The Color of Money" is black, and it is worth more than US money, as the entire economy is fossil fuel dependent (oil dependent). Tom was "Born on The Fourth of July". In reality he was born the third of July, but an administrative mistake stole one day of his life, what a shame! Over the years he became a "Legend". He is "The Last Samurai", for being the last flying legend. The younger generation is not as talented as his generation, and ultimately drones will replace the pilots. US Air Force will someday become obsolete, thanks to the machines (drones), much cheaper and getting the job done. Beside, drones don't need hospitals, pensions, and don't have a family to support. Tom's training was so expensive. And he has to fly on a regular basis to stay at the top of his form. Drones don't need to, they don't lose their ability even if they stay on the ground for a very long time. Nowadays, after the Great Recession of 2008, it's all about cutting on the expenses. The "Top Gun" era of Tom has to come to an end. Tom's aircraft (F-16) was sold "Without Limits" during decades to other countries for money making. "Jerry Maguire" the general of the US Air Force said "The Others" (Pentagone) told him to drastically cut down the expenses.

"A Few Good Men" would be left in a decade or so in the US Air Force due to the "fucking" drones. Most of the fighting pilots had their "Eyes Wide Shut", they didn't want to face the truth. How would they support their family if they got fired. "Days of Thunder" were coming and becoming a fighting pilot would be a "Risky Business" in a close future. The less talented and experienced pilots were about "Losin' It" all.

Hopefully Tom made "All the Right Moves". He had support and protection from an "Endless Love", from her former flying instructor, Kelly. They used to share "Cocktail", and he took her "Far and Away" on his big Kawasaki GPZ 900R (motorbike) when he was a student at the US Air Force Academy. It was a long time ago, but as it was an "Endless Love", she was still fond of him. It had been a passionate love affair and they sometimes "Shattered Glass". Their love relationship was really like a "Tropic Thunder" due to Tom's impulsiveness. He made love to her during "Knight and Days". But their love was a "Mission Impossible" as it was against military laws for instructors and students to share an intimate relationship. Their "Rock of Ages" relationship never ended entirely as they continued to love each other in secret. "Jack Reacher", a sergeant at the time, found out about their forbidden love, and threatened them to make a "Minority Report" to the Colonel "Rain Man" (nickname). They could have been suspended and would have become "The Outsiders", not a good start in the US Air Force.

Tom had to be a winner to get as far as he got, and making her instructor Kelly fall in love with him emphasized the outstanding quality, mentality and personality he showed from the day he stepped in the classroom, as she was the first to notice it by being hopelessly attracted to him.

"In this life, it's not what you hope for, it's not what you deserve - it's what you take!"

And Tom made his point very clear by beating "Val" on the finish line as the best student the year they graduated, and by winning Kelly's heart. Who else than Tom could pretend having his instructor waking up naked in his bed in the entire history of the US Air Force? Tom just took what he hoped he deserved, and that's the bottom line.

"When you have to cope with a lot of problems, you're either going to sink or you're going to swim."

Or you're going to fly high in the sky like Tom if you are an "he-man" like him (5'7'' tall).

"I always look for a challenge and something that's different."

Winning Kelly's heart was really a different challenge. Most of the aspiring pilots would stick to become the best pilot. Tom wanted more than just being the best pilot, and he got in trouble for that, almost getting sent out of the US Air Force Academy for dating his instructor.

"I had to train myself to focus my attention. I became very visual and learned how to create mental images in order to comprehend what I read."

Mixing love with studies requires a special effort to stay focused. The other students had only to deal with the academy, Tom had to deal with the academy and Kelly. He had some extra work to do after classroom. It was very enjoyable, but took some energy away.

"Perception and reality are two different things."

And being to optimistic leads to unreal expectations. If World War II was a success, Korea War was a draw, Vietnam War was a loss, and Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, a draw that look more like a loss than a victory in the end. US Army clear military superiority gave a false perception of the situation in all the post WW2. A weaker, but smarter opponent can outplay a much stronger opposition. US Air Force are not of use against new strategies like unconventional warfare (guerrilla). Maybe it's time for Tom to retire, or train in a different kind of war, where the domination of the sky doesn't win a war anymore.

"So, goodnight Tom. The star of US legends of your time like Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan and yourself shone high in the sky. But now it's time to get back to reality and land for good."
