What Happened To Jolie

8:10 PM

Jo reclined against the hard metal back of the bus seat, her mind empty with exhaustion. The 7:00 grungy city bus trundled its way through the foggy, drizzly evening, its hulking frame grinding and rocking, making rest impossible. She marveled at the daily toll she took on her body, spending all day on her feet, serving soups and pastas to hordes of greedy tourists for a greedy corporate owned Italian restaurant. Absentmindedly, Jo plucked and pulled on a snag in her black apron, restlessly fidgeting. Every shift was a blur of mental math, casual conversation, and smiling until you hated yourself and everyone around you. The weekend shifts were worse, never complete until you were completely out of your mind, behind on at least one round of tables, and ready to walk out. Just the same as every day, she was too beat to even take off her apron. She mused, sometimes she still had it on for her next shift the next day.

Jo would later swear she didn't know what she was doing when she  slipped out her phone, just to check the time, and mechanically punched out a message to Sam, her friend's boyfriend. She slowly tucked her phone away, tapping her foot with what might have been impatience. Less than 2 minutes passed and she heard the beep of his reply. She straightened up, a tremor of anticipation rolling through her body from head to tapping toe. She watched her hand shaking as she pulled the bus cord, just in time for the stop she wanted. The bus groaned to a stop and she creeped to the front to take her leave, feeling what must have been the glare of contempt she received from the other passengers as she passed them. As she exited onto the sidewalk, she felt sure they knew what she was about to do.

What was she doing? She was over a 40 minute walk from home, and so, so tired. She plodded forward through the rain, down the street and turning at the cross walk that now felt so familiar. She could already see the high roof of the 227,000 Square Foot Casino.

Her stomach lurched in excitement as she entered the Las-Vegas Style Resort, feeling the onslaught of the chiming music of the conglomerate of slot machines. It was music to hear ears she all but ran through the maze of machines, pausing briefly to pop out a .43 Cent Cash Ticket on an abandoned machine on her way. She Earned a long sideways glance from the heavy-set Asian woman playing the next machine but she didn't say anything. They almost never do.

Jo didn't care about people like that anymore, her only worry was her target, the precious baggie Sam had waiting for her now just 2 rows away. There. He was playing the only game he ever played, a forgotten cigarette in his hand, and a blank look in his wide eyed face as he furiously pounded the spin button.

"You winning?" She sat down in the machine next to him.

"Fuck no, I was dude, I had it up like, almost $300 earlier." Sam slapped the screen in frustration.

"Here I'll win it back for you." She taunted him, putting a crisp $20 in her machine, and one in his.

"There you go, you'll get it." He cheered her on as she played. He put his hand between her thighs. They locked eyes for a brief moment, and he withdrew his hand, leaving behind a discreetly delivered package just as his girlfriend, Amy walked up. Jo got up and asked her to watch the game until she got back, tossed two cigarettes to them and rushed to the large public bathroom. Finally. Finally. Fuck, finally.

Jo pushed open the stall door and dropped her purse on the slimy floor, dropped her pants to her knees and sat on the toilet. Pulling her 'kit' out, as well as the small plastic bag, she deftly opened the 'package' and started to boil down the meth. Jo tested it, and decided it was good, drew it up into a syringe, pulled her arm out of its sleeve, tied off, and got ready for what she knew would be the wave of euphoria she had been consistently failing to seek out since she first started using months ago.

She would later swear she didn't know what she was doing as she pushed the sweet poison into her blood. Her head immediately started swimming, her throat tightening with heat, blood pumping as the drug swam through her veins. She removed the tie and rode the wave… twitching and gasping in the last stall of the women's restroom of her favorite casino.
