How do you know when you have fallen out of love?
For some people, it's arguments
Which begin as rain
And end as raging oceans,
And they drown.
For others, bitterness and silence.
I suppose there must be those
Who don’t fall out at all,
though I’m not sure I’ve met them.
But what is it for me?

I have a feeling
It’s sitting alone
On a Wednesday evening,
Wondering why I am alone.

It’s dinners I wasn’t invited to,
And conversations which end
Before they’ve begun.

At first, it was not drinking wine with supper,
And became not having supper at all.
It’s parties we hold, and talk
Only about canapés,
Under the stars,
While you take someone tall and
Terribly
Beautiful for a walk along the canal.

Don’t get me wrong,

It’s a very civilised out-of-love.
We still sleep with backs touching,
Share successes,
Stay for Christmas,
Make tea,
Kiss,
Smile goodbye.

It is the skeleton of love.

But, my darling, there is no flesh.
And without flesh,
What am I to eat?
