Adrian was short and fat, and to make matters worse he had a squint. His black curly hair was receding and at thirty two he looked more like fifty.

He was an only child and still lived with his doting mother. His father had died of a heart attack when he was seven and he and his mother had an unnatural co-dependent relationship. His mother was terrified of ending up on her own so she always discouraged Adrian from having friends, especially female. In fact at thirty two Adrian was still a virgin, on the two occasions he had arranged dates with girls his mother faked a heart attack and managed to sabotage things. But now things were changing, he had a woman.

On the way home from work he met Jean at the tube station. And in secret they had been on two dates. At the end of the second date they kissed, all of the following day all Adrian could think about was the embrace and kiss. Deep in his heart he knew that his life had to change and that the time was now. After a long conversation he managed to convince Jean to come to his house and meet his mother, she was reluctant but Adrian made her realise he had to assert his independence and show his mother he was his own man. A real man had a woman in his life. Adrian had not warned his mother that he was bringing Jean home in case she faked another heart attack and as he put the key in the door his heart was pounding... His Mother was in her bedroom, and he took Jean into the living room.

“Hi Mum, can you come down there’s somebody I’d like you to meet.”

She came into the living room and then froze the moment she saw the two of them standing there.

“I’d like you to meet Jean, she’s the woman in my life.” He felt so proud to say those words.
There was an uncomfortable silence, then his mother stepped forward and shook hands with Jean.
“So Adrian, this is the woman in your life.” She put emphasis on the word ‘woman’ and smiled.

“Yes mother, it is and why are you smiling? Please don’t mess this up for me.”

His Mother suddenly began laughing ,tears streamed from her eyes and she held her stomach and doubled up, when she looked up at Adrian and Jean she got worse and the laughter became hysterical.
She managed to gasp “This is the woman in your life.”

Adrian just stared at his Mother, with his mouth open and his arms down by his side. Generally his Mother was a maudlin unhappy woman that did not like to laugh; it was as though she had saved up 10 years of laughter for this moment.

“For God sake, stop it” Adrian screamed.

His Mother sat down on the settee and put both of her hands over her mouth in a bid to control herself.

“So this is the woman in your life,” she whispered without looking up at him.
“Yes it is!” he hissed.
“But son, that’s not a woman it’s a man dressed in women’s clothes” and she burst into another fit of hysterical laughter.
Adrian turned slowly round and looked at Jean. Jean looked at him with a wry smile, pulled off her beautiful Blond wig off and said,
“I’m sorry Adrian I thought you knew.”

“Oh my God, we kissed” Adrian screamed like a wounded animal, opened the flat door and ran down the street.

After a couple of minutes Adrian’s mother looked across and said in a calm voice,
“Take a seat Nathan also known as Jean, you did an excellent job, thank you.” She smiled.
“Have you got my money?” Nathan said.

Adrian’s Mother took an envelope from her pocket and handed it to Nathan.
“There’s £500 in the envelope and here’s a £200 bonus.”
Nathan counted the money and smiled.
“Just one question, why do that to your son?”

“I read in his diary, he wanted a woman, he wanted to move out, he wanted to leave me on my own. After 32 years of devotion to that ungrateful sneak he wanted to dump me.That when I came up with my plan, I thought, I’ll give him more woman than he can stomach.”
