ASTRO GIRLS

“Pilot”

By Laura C. Evans

EXT. OUTER SPACE - 4066

Vast and empty, stars as far as the eye can see, infinite blackness. Outside of Jupiter.

CRAWL

4066 CE. After earth became uninhabitable, the other planets of the solar system were terraformed and populated. However, with great advancements in space travel, the rest of the universe has become a profitable area of exploration.

A medium-sized spaceship appears, soaring through the sky towards planet Jupiter. About the size of a small car, shiny dark metal.

INT. ARYA'S SPACESHIP - DAY.

A sleek and compact cockpit, with two chairs together by the controls and two passenger chairs behind them. Three girls sit in the cockpit: ARYA MCBANE (25), a muscular, freckle faced woman in a Martian war helmet and gold shoulder pads, TORA VULCAN (25), a curvy but pretty girl with slippers and a loose fitting dress and scarf and a general posture of relaxation, and GEMMY HERMES (24), a thin girl with short purple hair and clothing that makes it hard to tell if she's a boy or a girl.

ARYA

So then, we ripped the guy's throat out, and charged out of the place into a batallion of -

GEMMY

So Tora, how was Neptune?

Arya looks annoyed for a moment, then turns to Tora, who takes a moment then speaks.

TORA

Great. Did you know that they don't call pork roast "pork roast" over there?"

GEMMY

Really?

ARYA

What do they call it?

TORA

Flavor Mark. I don't know why.

Arya looks out the window.

ARYA

Oop, strap in. Here we go.

Gemmy buckles her seatbelt. Tora grips the arms of her chair. Arya leans forward and slams her foot on the gas.

EXT. SPACE.

The ship goes into overdrive, speeding into the atmosphere of the nearby planet.

INT. SPACESHIP.

Tora groans, about to puke. Gemmy has her eyes shut and mutters a few sentences back and forth. Arya grins.

ARYA

Oh, calm down!

EXT. JUPITER CITY - DAY.

A vast, sprawling metropolis. Shining, opulent buildings, a world for the wealthy. The ship speeds into a highway in the sky filed with similar crafts, of different colors and makes. A ship behind Arya's honks at her.

INT. SPACESHIP - DAY.

Arya glares out the window and honks her own horn right back.

TORA

Oh, Arya...

ARYA

Stupid ships.

Gemmy waves her hands and a holographic map appears before her.

GEMMY

All right, we're looking for Leone Enterprises, so we first turn right on fifth -

ARYA

Don't worry, I know how to get there.

Gemmy bites her lower lip.

GEMMY

Uh-huh. So, you take the first right turn on fifth -

Tora rolls her eyes.

EXT. JUPITER CITY - DAY.

The ship speeds down a highway and slowly descends before a huge golden tower. Inscribed above the parking lot entrance is LEONE ENTERPRISES.

INT. LEONE ENTERPRISES PARKING LOT - DAY.

As the ship enters the doorway, a holographic barrier appears preventing them from going further. A face appears on the doorway - CAPRICORNIA KRONOR (24), a thin-faced woman in a prim bum and glasses, an impeccable suit and a sour expression.

CAPRICORNIA

ID please.

INT. ARYA'S SPACESHIP - DAY.

Arya presses a button on the dashboard, and leans forward to speak into a small microphone.

ARYA

Hiya, Cap! Its me again, right on time!

CAPRICORNIA

ID, please.

Tora leans into the microphone

TORA

Arya McBane, Tora Vulcan and Gemmy Hermes.

Gemmy crowds her head in as well.

GEMMY

Ms Leone asked for us.

EXT. LEONE ENTERPRISES PARKING LOT - DAY.

Capricornia examines something out of frame of the hologram, then looks up and nods.

CAPRICORNIA

Initiate transportation of ship to Level 9.

The hologram switches off, and a holographic shaft encircles the ship. A tractor beam from above pulls the ship upwards.

The ship finally stops at "Level 9". A doorway opens up, and the ship speeds down the shaft. The entire interior of the place is gold-plated and shiny, with numbers engraved.

INT. ARYA'S SPACESHIP - DAY.

Arya leans into the ship's controls, Tora grips the arms, and Gemmy counts the numbers on the wall.

INT. LEONE ENTERPRISES - DAY.

At the end of the shaft, the ship enters a wide-open docking bay. The Tractor beam sets it down, and as it touches the floor it powers off.

The side doors open and Arya jumps out, landing on both feet.

ARYA

Race you to Lea's office!

And she speeds off at light-speed, faster than the eye can see. Tora and Gemmy poke their heads out of the door behind her.

GEMMY

You know, that challenge doesn't mean much when you've got super speed.

INT. LEA LEONE'S OFFICE ANTEROOM - DAY.

Capricornia sits at a desk in the corner of a small round room, with a large window overlooking Jupiter City and a wooden bench opposite the desk.

There's a buzz at the door, and Cap looks up from piles of meticulously stacked paperwork.

CAPRICORNIA

ID?

ARYA (VO)

Come on, Cap! It's us! Well, me, they're still catching up.

CAPRICORNIA

Name?

ARYA (VO)

(sighs) Arya McBane.

Cap nods, pushes a button. Arya speeds into the room and in front of the desk.

ARYA

Hey Cap! Nice to see you again, how've you been? As if I have to ask - stiff and busy as always!

CAPRICORNIA

Mm.

Tora and Gemmy make it to the door, both panting. Arya catches sight of them and grins widely.

ARYA

Ha! Beat you!

Gemmy sticks her tongue out. Tora rolls her eyes.

TORA

Not...a fair...contest.

CAPRICORNIA

I'll tell Ms Leone you're here.

She pushes a button on her desk.

LEA (O.S.)

Yes?

CAPRICORNIA

Your guests are he-

LEA

SEND THEM IN, NOW!

Cap presses another button and the door to the inter office opens.

ARYA

Thanks Cap - nice hairdo.

She skips inside. Cap is silent. Tora and Gemmy follow.

INT. LEA'S OFFICE - DAY.

Gold-plated walls, bright yellow silk tapestries, a high domed ceiling, a huge window overlooking downtown Jupiter City. Bright lights, shining gold desk.

LEA LEONE (25) swivels around in her desk chair. She wears a fur collar, elaborate hair, and resembles a curled up lioness. She bounces out of her chair with a huge smile as the girls enter.

LEA

Arya, Tora, Gemmy! So wonderful to see you girls again, I can't even begin to describe, I've been waiting for what feels like forever! What took you so long? Of course, bad traffic today - always is on Sundays!

She stands before them, hand extended. Arya takes it, and is shaken so hard her whole body starts shaking.

ARYA

Good to see you too -

LEA

Tora, dear, how was Neptune?

Tora opens her mouth to speak, but as Lea shakes her hand like Arya's and cuts her off.

LEA

Wonderful, of course! Glad to hear you're doing so well, you too Gemmy! That discovery - quantum particulates? Revolutionary!

GEMMY

Not to be rude, but why are we here?

Lea takes her hand and looks thoughtful for a moment.

LEA

Well, scientists haver a number of theories, as do philosophers and general thinkers - but you meant why are we here, right now, in my office?

GEMMY

Yeah.

LEA

Glad you asked. Take a seat.

She presses a button on her desk and three chairs spin up from the floor behind the girls. They take their seats and Lea lifts a remote from the edge of her desk. Presses another button, and a shade drops over the window. The other girls exchange nervous looks.

LEA

You may recall that about a year ago, I hired you three, and seven others, to accompany Cap and me on a mission to the outer rim.

TORA

How could we forget?

EXT. OUTER SPACE - DAY.

Flashback: A large ship, with LEONE INDUSTRIES on the side, drifts through space towards the asteroid belt.

INT. SPACESHIP - DAY.

Lea, Arya, Tora, Gemmy, Cap, and a number of other are asleep in a main chamber. LIBRA JUSTICE (23), the well-dressed, poised captain, begins to drift up, then jumps as the ship is steering off course. An alarm begins to sound, all of the passengers jump up.

The ship is heading for an asteroid, which is emitting some sort of gas. Libra tries to steer away, but the gas starts seeping into the ship as they get closer. As they breathe it in, they all fall down in faints.

SEVERAL HOURS LATER

They all wake up, looking around. Arya tries to walk and starts super speeding. Gemmy lifts off the ground and with a flick of her wrist, a heavy piece of machinery lifts of its own accord. When she lets go of it in fear, it falls on Tora, who catches it easily and tosses it aside.

INT. LEA'S OFFICE - DAY

Arya nods.

ARYA

Have you found out what that gas was?

LEA

(laughs) No. But I have a suspicion. You see, Cap and I returned to the scene of the crime...

FLASHBACK:

EXT. SPACE - THE METEOR.

In a spacesuit, Capricornia drifts to the surface of the meteor. When her feet touch down she pumps both fists out and then down. The meteor morphs open, unleashing a large amount of the same green substance as before. At the center is a glittering diamond - or a piece of one.

INT. LEA'S OFFICE  -DAY.

Present time. Lea holds up the same diamond.

LEA

This...is the substance that gave us all our powers. I've taken it to multiple scientists...and none of them can identify it.

GEMMY

It looks like a diamond.

LEA

It is. But there's some substance laced into it that they can't explain. And that's why we can all control elements, and why Arya can super-speed and Tora can lift like Superman, and Gemmy has telekinesis.

ARYA

So what next?

Lea grins. She raises a remote to the ceiling and the room goes dark. The ceiling becomes a projection of the night sky.

LEA

Thousands of years ago, when people still lived on the home planet -

TORA

Do we have to start thousands of years ago?

LEA

Yes we do. Thousands of years ago, the home planet had some strange ideas about the stars. They called arrangements of stars "Constellations".

She presses a button on the remote and the ceiling of the room is suddenly lit up with a perfect replica of the night sky. Various arrangements of stars are outlined - including "Ursa Major" and "Casseiopeia"

LEA

There were twelve particular constellations that were actually used by everyday hoo-has to predict their futures and give out daily advice. The word was -

She snaps her fingers, trying to remember, then swipes up her hand.

LEA

Horoscopes. They called them…horoscopes. They were based on twelve constellations along a particular belt called the Zodiac.

The twelve signs of the zodiac light up - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc.

GEMMY

Yeah, I've heard of -

LEA

Sst, set! The twelve signs of the Zodiac are all based on the four elements - three earth signs, three fire signs, three air signs, three water signs.

ARYA

Fire?

LEA

Precisely!

She lights up a flame in her hand and the others stare at it.

LEA

And the first sign of the Zodiac, named for the Greek God of war? Aries.

The outline of the sign appears in the stars, and a presentation forms the shape of a ram. Lea looks around expectantly.

ARYA

So…?

LEA

Aries. Fire sign. Ram. Aries, Arya…

ARYA, TORA, GEMMY

Oh… Oh!

LEA

Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Capricorn - you see the pattern.

She hits the remote button again and again as she says each sign, and the outlines of the four signs appear around the stars - the bull, the twins, the lion, the goat.

GEMMY

So that's where the power comes from?

LEA

Precisely.

She clicks another button on the remote and the sky view fades away, the windows open. Lea turns to face the girls again, beaming.

LEA

And I am positive that there is more to this diamond than meets the eye.

ARYA

Like what?

LEA

Like, perhaps, other pieces. See the divide of the fissure?

She holds the diamond fragment up for the other girls to see. The diamond's edge is rough and fragmented.

TORA

Yeah, I see it.

LEA

I have a lead on where the rest of it may be. And if we find more of it -

GEMMY (interrupting)

We could study it, figure out how it works, create a formula…

ARYA

Armies of super-soldiers…

TORA

Thousands of dollars when we sell them...

LEA

All possibilities.

She switches off the sky presentation; the shades on the windows come up, the light returns to the room.

LEA

Now, to come to the point -

ARYA

We're still not at -

Tora nudges her, and she shuts up.

LEA

I want everyone on the mission. The three of you, myself and Cap, and the others. So you three need to go and get them.

ARYA

Sounds great.

TORA

Wait, wait.

She looks Lea in the eyes.

TORA

This trip - it's, it's crazy. I'm sorry, but there's just no guarantee of profit.

GEMMY

So?

TORA

So, what if we spend what, a year on this expedition, and we never find anything? That's a year of our lives we're not getting back.

LEA

Tora, Tora. My dear. That is what we do. We are explorers. It is our job to chase down leads that might not pay. And you needn't worry, besides. I'm footing the bill all the way. All expenses paid, your salaries, cost of the ship. Either way, you'll make money.

TORA

And I'll save on housing for a year…

ARYA

Come on, Snore-a - Lea said fetch the others.

LEA

That I did.

CUT TO

INT. COCKTAIL LOUNGE - PLANET VENUS. DAY.

Bustling and busy, with performing singers wearing fruit on their heads. At the bar, LIBRA JUSTICE (26) sits waiting for the barkeep to come to her; he's got an eye on her as he finishes up with a surly old man, and as he looks up and down her lithe body, fancy clothes and pretty, feminine features, he gets more and more impatient to get to her order. She smiles back at him, soaking up the gaze.

The barkeep practically trips on his way over to her. Libra pretends not to notice.

BARKEEP

So, tell me - what do you want?

LIBRA

Smooth cosmopolitan with a sweet taste…lots of salt on the rim…

and a really big cherry on top.

She leans in as she speaks, making eye contact. She means exactly what he thinks she means. He gulps a bit, sweat all over the nose, and she smirks.

BARKEEP

C-coming right up.

LIBRA

Thanks, doll.

He scampers to the ingredients rack and Libra re-opens a book she'd been reading - 36th Century Court Cases, Index A-B. As she's reading, Arya comes up behind her.

LIBRA

Never were one for showers, were you dear?

ARYA

I'm sorry ,did you grow a third eye while I was away?

Libra closes her book and swivels around to look at Arya. The two girls smile at each other, all in good fun.

LIBRA

I'd know those clomping footsteps anywhere.

ARYA

Reading boring legal books for fun again? You need a

personality, stat.

LIBRA

Did you want a drink? I mean, I'd hand you the menu,

but given your disdain for reading…

The barkeep returns with Libra's drink, smiling expectantly, while she speaks. His frown slips as Libra ignores him, and he finally clears his throat. She turns around, looking surprised, and takes the drink, swiveling back around to face Arya without a second glance. The barkeep sulks away. Throughout all of this, Arya watches with a cocked eyebrow.

ARYA

I'm not here to banter with you, honey. Strictly

business

LIBRA.

A shame. That business would be?

ARYA

Another expedition. Leone Enterprises funded. We've

got a lead.

LIBRA

Really?

ARYA

Uh-huh. A good one too. Could use a good pilot.

Libra looks her in the eye.

CUT TO

EXT. ANCIENT TOMB - JUPITER. DAY.

SAGITTARIA JONES (Mid 20's) walks ahead of a small crew of scientists, her head cocked to one side. She wears a leather jacket, a high ponytail, and carries a quiver and bow. With a long knife she cuts away the branches in front of her.

The group comes to the edge of the forest and stare up at the giant temple, built on layers and layers of stone.

SAGITTARIA

Mankind can be mementous in the name of their Lords.

SCIENTIST 1

Can ya hurry it up a bit? My leg's getting sore.

SAGITTARIA

That's probably a red tail snake bite. Easy to mistake

for a sore.

The scientist jumps back, horrified, as Sagittaria pulls out a pair of binoculars to look at the temple. The other scientists crowd around him, while the tallest of the bunch stands close behind Sagittaria.

SCIENTIST 2

What kinda artifact are we looking for, exactly?

SAGITTARIA

A Mapolian Dagger Stone. Very well-protected.

Highly precious.

SCIENTIST 2

Worth a lot?

SAGITTARIA

Priceless historical value. Moneywise? I dunno.

Maybe a couple hundred.

SCIENTIST 2

You gotta be kidding me..

A cell phone rings at Sagittaria's wrist. She picks it up, glances at the name, and grins. With one finger, she taps it.

SAGITTARIA

Hello, Gemmy.

GEMMY

Hey. You sound fuzzy, where are you?

SAGITTARIA

The depths of the Jupiter Rainforest.

GEMMY

Great spot. Excavating Mapolia?

SAGITTARIA

The same.

GEMMY

Well, I called to tell you, we've got a new expedition with Leone Enterprises

SAGITTARIA

What? When?

GEMMY

We're gathering the crew, I'd say come meet us around Saturday at Lea's.

SAGITTARIA

Say no more. See you there.

She taps the screen off, then starts walking in another direction.

SCIENTIST 1

Where the heck are you going?

SAGITTARIA

Leone Enterprises.

SCIENTIST2

What about Mapolia?

SAGITTARIA

It'll still be here.

SCIENTIST 3

What about us?!

Sagittaria doesn't even turn around.

SAGITTARIA

Just double back the way we came.

They stay after her, incredulous. Sagittaria then snaps her fingers and disappears in a puff of smoke.

CUT TO:

INT. SCIENCE LAB - URANUS. DAY.

Test tubes everywhere. Tall ceiling, plants growing in little boxes all over the place. AQUARIA WATERMAN (25) stands over a box, and waves her hand. A miniature cloud appears over the box and starts pouring rainwater inside. Aquaria waves her hand and a breeze from nowhere blows the cloud over to another box, with misshapen plants poking through the top.

Sagittaria appears from nowhere behind her in a puff of smoke. Aquaria doesn't even notice, her eyes fixed on the plants.

SAGITTARIA

Ack-ee? Hello?

AQUARIA

It's considered respectful in some cultures

to knock before teleporting inside a person's lab.

She turns around, smiling.

AQUARIA

But not in mine. How are you?

SAGITTARIA

Pretty good.

AQUARIA

What's that smell?

SAGITARIA

Oh - Vernicious limer slime. You run into them all the time

on Jupiter.

AQUARIA

Were you just in the rainforest?

SAGITTARIA

Yeah - but I came to tell you, I got a call from Gemmy.

AQUARIA

What about?

EXT. THE MOON – DAY.

A run-down place, with gangs roaming the filthy streets.

INT. MOON HOSPITAL – DAY.

A busy place, fast-moving and packed with noise. A long line has formed outside of the door marked “Dr Armado.”

Inside sits CANCRA ARMADO (24), an attractive Hispanic doctor in scrubs; she has an ample figure and a kindly twinkle in her eyes. The next patient is wheeled in a chair, coughing and wheezing.

PATIENT

DR. Armado – hack – I have Mortisis.

They say there’s simply no chance…

CANCRA

Come here, dear. Take a deep breath.

She places her hands on his chest. He obliges with a deep breath. She closes her eyes and a soft glow emits from her hands. She moves them in circular patterns around his chest, and his coughing lessens. His breaths come easily.

As she pulls away, he stands up. Smiles  in disbelief.

PATIENT:

It’s gone.

There’s cheers. Cancra pats him on the shoulder.

CANCRA

Take it easy.

The door opens up  and Tora enters. Cancra looks surprised.

CANCRA

Tora? You’re ill?

TORA

No. I need to talk to you.

CANCRA

I have a lot of people waiting for a cure.

TORA

It’s urgent.

Cancra locks gaze with her. After a long moment, she shrugs.

CANCRA

No arguing with you, I guess.

INT. MOON HOSPITAL – LATER THAT DAY.

Cancra and Tora stand in the lounge, drinking coffee.

CANCRA

I’m sorry. But I can’t leave on one of

Lea’s crazy expeditions. I need to be here

curing people.

TORA

Cancra, I don’t want to go on a voyage

either. But if we could figure out how you

got your healing abilities, we could give

them to every doctor in the galaxy. Think about it.

Your miracle cure, available for anyone who

wants it. Everyone who needs to be

healed, healed with just a touch of a

treated doctor’s hands.

Cancra bites her lower lip and studies her coffee cup. Thinking it over.

CANCRA

A year, you say?

INT. MERCURY MANSION – DAY.

A crystal chandelier hangs from the ceiling. A duster is inserted from above – where VIRGA SLADZKY (26) hangs from her feet. She’s an ascerbically skinny, pale android, in a white maid’s uniform; pretty in a china-doll way. She spritzes some “MERCURY CLEANING OINTMENT” on the chandelier and starts putting a shine on the stones.

From beneath her, Capricornia looks up, awaiting an answer.

VIRGA

Don’t think I’m interested.

CAPRICORNIA

Full time pay. And plenty of steady

work. 11 sailors are a lot to cook

and clean for.

Virga unsticks her feet from the ceiling, satisfied that the chandelier has received its full dusting, and does a somersault to the floor, landing on her feet.

VIRGA

Cap, it would take more than

a year to scan the entire galaxy

for the remnants of that diamond. Even

if Lea had any solid leads, there’s

way more risk than any potential reward.

CAPRICORNIA

Since when has that stopped

anyone?

Virga pauses for a moment to consider.

VIRGA

I guess I’ll go. At the very

least so I don’t always

wonder what would’ve happened if

I had.

CAPRICORNIA

Just sign here.

She holds out a form for Virga; who signs her name in very neat, precise writing ‘Virga Sladzky.’ She then reaches out and straightens Cap’s collar.

VIRGA

Besides, I don’t think I’d

sleep right knowing all those sailors

were out there making a mess of a perfectly

good starship.

Cap nods in ascent.

EXT. NEPTUNE SWAMPS – DAY.

A row of houses elevated above the water, all made of wood. Green aliens sleep outside. Peaceful and quiet. From up above, a glittering starship ascends, making its landing in the shallower parts of the swamp. The aliens don’t seem to notice or care as Lea exits.

INT. NEPTUNE SWAMP HOUSE – DAY.

PISCEA FISCHER (32) sits cross-legged on the floor of a very simple hut, filled with plants she’s grown herself. She’s meditating and wears a distant smile on her face; she’s very tiny, faint and delicate-looking, with overlong hair and the look of a drowned Ophelia.

Lea enters without knocking and tip-toes towards her. Piscea’s eyes remain closed.

PISCEA

Hello, Lea.

LEA

How did you –

PISCEA

I knew two months ago.

LEA

Right. Precognizant. Don’t think

I’ll ever get used to that. Well,

never mind.

She sits down opposite Piscea and crosses her own legs.

LEA

I suppose you know what I’m here for.

PISCEA

Also knew two months ago.

LEA

What’s your answer?

PISCEA

Yes. I’d love to be your cartographer.

LEA

And learn where you got your powers?

Unless you already know?

PISCEA

Nope.

LEA

Good! I’d hate to have bothered everyone

for nothing.

Piscea stands up and Lea mimics her, seizing her hand and shaking it so hard her whole body rocks.

LEA

Meet me at my place

on Saturday.

EXT. LEONE ENTERPRISES – SATURDAY MORNING.

The eleven girls are gathered together outside the glittering starship. Cap, counting them off on a list, looks over at Lea.

CAP

Where’s Scorpia?

LEA

I left her a dozen messages. But if

she doesn’t arrive soon…

A roaring sound comes from the distance. Everyone turns as a hovering motorcycle comes raging into view. On top sits a woman clad all in black – leotard, boots, tattoos, piercings. Short black hair. SCORPIA SASORI (28) dismounts her hover car and carries her substantial duffel bag with her up to Lea.

LEA

(to Cap)

Told you.

CAP

Scorpia. It’s been a long time.

SCORPIA

Too long.

Lea takes Scorpia’s arm and leads her away from the group as they all start boarding.

LEA

So nice to see you, honey. Really

has been, just like you said. Too long.

(quietly)

Just for the remainder of the trip,

so the other girls feel secure…

I’m gonna need you to promise

not to read their thoughts.

SCORPIA

It’s not something I can

just turn on and off.

LEA

Well, hopefully we’ll find

out how – You see, just, just do what

you can not to listen to what they’re

thinking. It’d mean so much.

SCORPIA

I’ll do my best.

Lea searches her face. No clues. She sighs and shrugs.

LEA

Well, that’s all good then.

She turns to the group, who all turn around the face her as she clears her throat.

LEA

Ladies, welcome aboard the Zodiac.

For the next twelve months, we will

be soaring the galaxy, searching for

perhaps the greatest secret ever to exist.

The twelve of us will ferret out every corner,

leave no stone unturned, even fight to find

the secret of our abilities.

She punches a fist into the air, her smile inviting the others to copy her. Arya does so, then turns to face the group as well with the air of an upcoming speech.

ARYA

Ready?

Gemmy, Libra and Aquaria nod.

ARYA

Let’s go.

She leads the way to the ship. Everyone follows her, in a straight line – Tora, Gemmy, Cancra, Lea, Virga, Libra, Scorpia, Sagittaria, Capricornia, Aquaria and Piscea trailing behind. She leaves a gap between her and the others and looks away, very sad.

PISCEA

It’s such a shame…

How it’s all going to end.

AQUARIA

What?

PISCEA

Nothing.

She follows her inside.

INT. ZODIAC SHIP – MORNING.

Everyone heads off in different directions.

INT. ZODIAC COCKPIT – MORNING.

Libra takes the controls. She starts up the engine by pressing a lever with her foot.

LIBRA

Strap in.

EXT. ZODIAC SHIP – MORNING.

The ship’s engines roar to life. A propeller on top begins vibrating. Slowly, the craft pushes off the ground, gaining momentum as it breaks the cloud cover…

INT. ZODIAC SHIP – MORNING.

In a main meeting room, the other girls strap on belts for safety. Libra’s face appears on a communicating monitor.

LIBRA

Preparing to leave Jupiter.

Gemmy swallows.

GEMMY

I hate this part.

EXT. OUTER SPACE.

The zodiac breaks the limits of Jupiter’s sky. Blasts off into space, gaining speed.

Another ship – bigger, shinier, designated “PATROL MONITOR ALPHA” surveys the Zodiac’s progress.

INT. PATROL MONITOR ALPHA – MORNING.

OPHIUCHUS (43), a tall, square-shouldered woman who carries a pet snake wrapped around her shoulders, surveys the progress of the ship from a window deck.

OPHIUCHUS

Leone.

She clenches a fist and picks up a telephone-shaped communicator.

OPHIUCHUS

Steven, set the course to follow

that cruiser. The one called Zodiac.

And put in a call to the Queen. I think

she’ll be very interested in what

our old pal Lea Leone is up to.

She strokes the snake’s head.

STEVEN

Yes, ma’am.

Ophiuchus replaces the comlink. She clears her throat impatiently as the ship changes course.

INT. ZODIAC SHIP – MORNING.

The girls in coach unbuckle their seatbelts. Arya, Gemmy and Tora gather at the viewport window to watch the blur outside.

Arya puts an arm around each of her two friends. Gemmy looks a little confused; Tora accepts without question. Behind them, the others are settling in. Cancra holds up a photograph of her mom and sighs, missing her already. Lea is looking in a mirror, checking her makeup to see if it’s on straight.
