The girl comes down to her stone littered beach daily. She plays among the smooth pebbles and jagged rocks, going on adventures with imaginary beasts and sprites. Her mind is vivid, transforming this unremarkable stretch of geology into a land of crystal towers and magic. There is always a quest to embark on, always beasts to battle and obstacles to overcome. Her feet are bare. So excitedly playing, she scarcely notices the cuts and grazes as she leaps gracefully between the rough stones among the lapping waves of the encroaching sea.

As the hour hand creeps to the letters IV on my watch dial and the minute hand becomes vertical, she appears. Running and skipping excitedly as is the norm. Mother and Father still think she is attending music classes. They are paying for another girl to learn the piano while she runs off to play by the ocean.

I stand here watching her everyday. It's my favourite place too, I always make sure we go together. I'm inspired by her never ending uses for such a mundane slice of earth. Nobody can appreciate her like I do, she's the daughter I never had.

Today I will have her.
