I often found myself in the forest, in the night, amid the sound of cackling jackals. I felt alive in the forest, despite the stench of death.

One fateful night, deep in thought, I heard something moving outside my camp. It moved carefully, taking cautious steps like a stalking animal.

I grabbed my bow and notched an arrow.

Peering into the dark, I was able to make out an amorphous black figure. It too stood in step, watching me watching him. Its eyes glowed yellow from the reflection in its eyes. We stood that way for quite some time, waiting for the other to make a move.

My eyes adjusted to the darkness and the creature was exposed, its orb like eyes staring at me with inhuman curiosity. It was an old male jackal.

I couldn’t help but wonder what the old goblin was doing so far from the cave. Perhaps he’d fled the colony to escape the larger, more aggressive females. Goblins have a tendency to kill the weak, the old and the sick. He may have fled to avoid being eaten by the colony.

He looked curious, reaching out as if to touch my face, despite being much too far away. It was the first time I’d seen semblance of emotion in a goblins eyes, but I took it for illusion.

“BuUkko mah tsEE bo” The goblin said in a throaty, rattling voice.
