A girl and her mother have a talk on the phone
Booksie Flash Fiction contest

200 Words

“It’s not so much out of fear…but it’s something I simply want to think about” Syd tells to her mother through the receiver of her cellphone. There should be no reason for her to have to try and build within her mother an understanding of a reason for her to want to look out from the mountain, unto the water.

“But stay on the phone with me” Syd says forcing a smile upon her face to show to her mother, despite the reality that she knew there was no way her mother could see it. But she hoped her mother could hear her smile, from the other side of a phone through the breaking of her voice being shredded by her sorrows.

“Okay baby” her mother says to her giving a sniffle, she could hear the agony of despair within her. She wished her mother could just accept that they were apart.

“I want to see you” her mother forced a laugh.

“I want to see you too” Syd let out a sob, “But I told you I can’t because you’re –“

“Just do it” her mother demanded.

Miss Midnight

Beautifully touching! Well written. You reached into my heart and squeezed tightly. I wanted to sob with her, grab tightly as well and not let go. The ever present fear of letting go. Brilliant Piece!
