The woman saw a teddy bear, warm and inviting. She saw her mother, her father, her brother, with wide eyes, filled with curiosity toward a new life. She saw hours of playing. She saw her babysitter, potty training, and her first day of kindergarten. She saw years after that. She saw her parents’ divorce, her brother in a hospital bed, withering away, his hair gone along with his childhood.
The woman saw her first day of high school, her first dance, her first student council meeting. She saw her first antidepressants, her first attempt, and her first dropout. The woman saw her life slip away even as it passed her by.
Then, she saw the waves hurtling toward her.
Then, the woman saw nothing.
