Negative And Positive.

Look at this,” she said, “and tell me what you see.”

Okay,” he replied. “On this table in front of me there is a glass that is half-empty.”

Are you sure?”

Yep! Absolutely positive,” he said.

What if I said to you that I don’t see the same thing as you? What if I said I see something entirely different?”

He looked at her sceptically. “I can’t see that you can see it as being anything other than it is, but go on then. Tell me what YOU see.”

Simple,” she said. “I see a glass that is half full!”

Half full, half empty......What’s the difference?”

Well, it’s a case of positive and negative, really. You are picking up on the fact that half of it has gone, been used up. You are seeing what is lacking.”

He nodded his head in agreement.

But I,” she continued, “see that there is some remaining. There’s more still to come.”

So?” he asked, refusing to see what she was trying to say.

Okay, I’ll put it a different way. We are in a desert with no water other than what is in this glass. You think, ‘Oh, no! It’s almost gone!’ But to me it means there is still more to drink. In other words I look at the water left in a positive light and you don’t. And that is why we can never agree, never get on for any length of time. Our whole way of looking at life is different.”

So what! So we’ll use a different way to describe the same thing but we’ll both be right.” He paused for a second, scratched his head in confusion. “Neither of us is wrong, are we?”

Wrong? No. But we’re not compatible either.”

Are you saying.....?”

She interrupted him. “What I’m saying is that when I walk out of this door in just a couple of minutes knowing I won’t be coming back, I’ll look on it positively. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be sad. But it gives us both a chance to start again, to find someone that is on the same wave-length as ourselves, who can really understand what we mean.”

But....”

Please, let me finish explaining. You won’t see anything positive about my actions. You’ll see us breaking up and won’t even admit that there might be something positive in this. No doubt you hate me, or you will do when I leave but I’m doing this for you as much as me.” She stood up, walked towards the door.

I’m sorry. Truly, I am. But there is nothing to be gained by carrying on the way we’re going, arguing, disagreeing.....”

Don’t I get a say in this?” He was shocked. Incredulous. This was not what he had been expecting at all. “I can change, see things your way.....”

But that’s just it. You can’t! You can pretend. You can act. But that’s not being you, that’s being who you think I want you to be. And it just can’t work.”

Don’t go,” he said.

I’m sorry,” she said, and she walked through the door and pulled it firmly shut behind her.
