The night was quiet and still. I could hear crickets chirping and tree frogs croaking. It was very cold and windy. The night had felt like time stopped. Everything was still.I could see the dim light of the moon and from that I knew the sun was going to rise any minute now. I was lying in my bed staring out the quarter window. I couldn't sleep. I was afraid. I was afraid that master would see me and my familey escape to the Underground Railroad. The sun was riseing and the morning bell rang I rushed out to the feild where I started to pick Cotten. Momma was in the other feild picking more Cotten. I started to hum the alphabet song master heard me he dashed over and started beating me with a wip. Mother ran over and tried to tell master to wip her instead but he didn't he just kept wiping me then my skin tore I started to bleed I blinked back tears.Master shoved me away back to the feild. When we were done for the day master sent us back to our quarters. I sat on the bed with momma and showed her the scar from where I was bested with the wip.I asked mother why he had beat me with the wip? She said "Masters do not want slaves to be intelligent so that they can not over throw them.Masters are foolish and cruel"."But that will all change tonight because we are traveling to freedom." I knew what momma meant by that and I was very happy about it". It was the middle of the night and we had snuck out into the feild with a lot of other family's. Silent and still we tip toed into the woods where we found a hole."That hole leads to freedom "1 man said. As we snuck   Underground we saw a pathway.A woman named Harriet Tubman helped us escape. Everyone thanked her and quietly walked down the trail. Harriet had said that we be there by morning.I was tired momma had picked me up and put me on her back.It was morning and I was free! From that day on I remembered how brave we all were to be able to escape.
