AsylahMaddison, 6 years old

It was cold back in the hospital. Ayanna was lying, asleep and pale-looking, on the bed beside me, but I had no idea where mum or dad were. I didn't like this place. I mean, the people were nice. The bear was fluffy. And they gave me good food to eat, since my parents weren't around. But it was cold and pale at night, and I was lonely.
My vision blurred again for a split second, blurred pink. I looked over at the confusing hospital machine, which was beeping slightly. My vision cleared again.
I hadn't been here long but I'd grown used to it: either the beeping or the blurry pink change happened first. The doctors said my eyes were protecting me; it would usually last for a few hours, depending.
It was the only reason I was allowed in and out of here in the first place.
But I didn't like what it meant for Ayanna.
This had never happened to her.

AyannaMaddison, 10 years old

I couldn't see. It was like my sister said, that momentary, quick blurring, except for me it was cloudy-white and wouldn't go away. I didn't want to explain that this was what happened to our parents. They probably wouldn't come back.
But you try explaining that to your 6-year-old sister.
I wasn't sleeping; I kept my eyes closed because I couldn't see anyway.
Better dead than damaged, if temporarily.
My symptoms were ten times better than our parents, though. There was no fever, no nausea, no headaches, no nothing. As long as I kept my eyes firmly shut to the world, I could almost ignore it.
