Author Chapter Note

Before you read this story, please note I am not a professional writer so I kind of came up with my own style and if you don't like it then, tough. I'm sorry if you notice grammatical mistakes but I didn't write like I know what i was doing, I just wrote my idea down. I obviously used spell check and corrected the obvious mistakes. Anyways please enjoy and if you like it I'll write another one but only if this one turns out to be good.

One year after the incident at the McKinley Speedway, on a quiet Saturday morning in the American state of Georgia, Alec and Alanna Baxter have just been woken up by Bailey, the family pet. Bailey is a large husky who is licking their faces equally to get them to get up and feed him. Alec is the first to get out of their bed. He goes downstairs to get the dogfood to find Joe and Gabby at the kitchen table eating breakfast. Gabby is reading a book about Animal behaviour. She seems to be heavily invested in her studies as she fails to acknowledge her father’s presence with a ‘Good Morning’ unlike her brother Joe who is the typical Jock type and does not respond to his father’s greeting simply because he is listening to heavy metal music. Although Joe is the typical jock, he is atypically a brain box which he tries to hide to fit in with the rest of his jock type friends at the university.

Meanwhile, Alanna is upstairs frantically getting ready to pop into her office where she and Alec work to pick up a bit of paperwork. She rushes downstairs to grab her shoes. ‘Are you still alright to take the Gabby to the library and Joe to his friend’s house while I just grab those papers from the office, then we can meet at the restaurant later’ said Alanna.

‘Oh’ exclaimed Joe who has the look of a man who forgot his wife’s anniversary. ‘I thought I told you last night that Jimmy called me yesterday to say that he wanted me to come in this morning to speak to him about something.’

Alanna answers, ‘Oh great that means we will both have to take the kids to work’. Bailey nudges Alanna’s leg, ‘As well as the dog’. (Bailey was supposed to go with Joe to his friend’s house and since neither of the children can drive despite their age, Joe, Gabby, Bailey, Alanna and Alec would now have to go to Alec and Alanna’s office while they did their work.)

‘But mom I have studying to do my exams are in less than a month’ shouted Gabby.

‘Yeah and Demarcus is expecting me at his house so we can have a jam sesh, besides is Bailey even allowed in your office.’ Continued Joe who suddenly rips his headphones off.

‘Ok 1 Gabby I’m sorry you’ll just have to start studying at the office, 2 Joe there will be plenty of other times for you to jam sesh and 3 we have brought Bailey to the office before … wait your friends name is Demarcus, really, did his mother hate him.’

‘Ha Demarcus’ blurted Alec.

‘Alec that is really not helping the situation’ snapped Alanna.

Despite everyone’s bad start to the day, the Baxter’s clan plodded to the family’s single SUV.

As the family argued in the back of the car, Bailey started to get increasingly restless.

‘Mom will you please do something about Bailey’ blurted Gabby. ‘He going crazy back here’.

‘Hello I’m driving… Alec calm him down.’ Replied Alanna.

‘I don’t understand why you couldn’t just take the bus like you normally do mum’ questioned Joe.

‘The bus I usually take isn’t running today and it’s too far to walk so I was going to take the car’ exclaimed Alanna.

Well then how was I supposed to take Gabby to the Library and Joe to his friend’s house if you were going to take the car’ whispered Alec who at this point was really confused.

‘Well... you know... you could of... ok I didn’t think about that… why can’t you two drive yet.’ Stuttered Alanna.

Gabby and Joe exchange a look rolled their eyes and sighed.

Towards the end of the 30-minute journey Gabby, gazing out the window with Bailey’s tail in her hair, begins to get an uneasy feeling that washes over her. You can tell in her face which was a cross between a shocked face and confused face. Just then a truck drove past that read Fresh Ingredients in bold and capital letters, however, most of the letters were faded and very faint except the D, I and E in the word ingredients. As Gabby stared at this truck for longer she then noticed the word DIE which seemed to spook her as she flinches away from the window.

While this is happening, Joe is now listening to his music and hears weird static noises over his earphones. After a few seconds of these noises the Earthquake song by the Little Girls begins to play. Joe rips out his earphones alerting Gabby as the two exchange puzzled stares. At this point, Bailey is still freaking out.

Meanwhile FFN (Frozen Food Network) intern Kirsten Gibson is getting out of her brand new white Ford Fiesta and, as she presses the button on her keys to lock it, feels a small tremor beneath her feet. Thinking it was nothing she continues on into the office to make Jimmy’s morning coffee.

Back with the Baxter’s the family get out of their car and Joe is trying to pull Bailey out of the car not wanting to leave him in the car but it is proving very difficult. Bailey has locked his legs firmly on the car seats not wanting to move a muscle. Alec steps in and proceeds to lift bailey out of the car attaching his leash to his collar.

Gabby, Joe, Bailey, Alanna and Alec all walk through the front door, Gabby stops and stares at a sign at the front door reading, this building is earthquake proof. Above this sign is the building’s address 180 Par Islington Rd. Alanna greets the receptionist Joanna Munk at the desk and pushes the button for the elevator. The building only has 10 floors and the floor she needs is number 10 so she proceeds to push number 10 which doesn’t do anything, Gabby and Joe notice how only the 6 is lighting up and it continues flashing in sets of 3. So, Alec pushes all the numbers and the family endure a rather bumpy elevator ride to floor six. The Baxter’s then proceed to make their way to the top, tenth floor using the stairs.

They finally reach the extremely spacious tenth floor and are greeted by Laura and Matt, Alec and Alanna’s best friend. Laura is pregnant and is not far off her due date.

‘Hey Alanna, Alec, my god your kids look so old now it only seems like yesterday that they were in elementary school… Joe you look like Alec so much.’ Laura exclaimed.

‘Uh thanks I guess’ answered Joe.

Alec then nudges Joe’s arm signalling him to shut up.

‘How come your both in today I though you two had a special day planned today.’ Questioned Matt.

Well Alanna wasn’t listening when I told her Jimmy rang me yester…’ Alec began to say.

‘It’s a long story’ confessed Alanna who was still a bit out of breath from all those stairs.

‘Bailey, come her boy.’ Matt said in a childish manner. But something was wrong, whenever Matt saw Bailey he opened his arms and Bailey would run up to him and lick him all over but today bailey walked slowly up to him and continued to become nervous around everyone.

‘Oh, what’s wrong with him’ asked Matt.

‘He was acting weird in the car as well’ answered Joe.

Matt continued to stroke Bailey while Jimmy came out of his office. At this point, Gabby, had dumped her books on the nearest desk and continued to stare out the office window at the extremely tall skyscraper next door. Joe was next to her with his earphones hanging from his jacket.

‘Laur you look a bit down, is everything OK?’ Asked Alanna.

‘Yeah… it’s just…’ said Laura in a very sad tone.

‘She’s thinking about her mother’ Finished Matt.

‘Oh, God I’m sorry, Claire was like a mother to all of us, at least she had a good funeral.’ Said Alanna as Laura stared at a picture of her mother, with the date of death being 18/06/2010, 13 days before the current date.

Jimmy overhears this conversation and jokingly says, ‘Come on Laura, you’ll be with her in no time.’

‘For god sake Jimmy, would it kill you to be a bit sensitive.’ Snapped Matt.

‘What’s up with your kids, Alec, they are your kids right.’ Said Jimmy in a joking manner.

‘Oh, shut up Jimmy’ snapped Alanna who began to find documents so she could photocopy them with the company’s brand new high tech photocopier.

‘Alright, alright, you know I can’t begin to understand what you see in him.’ Suggested Jimmy.

Just then Noah, the CEO of FFN comes in and shouts ‘Now, now Jimmy wouldn’t want you to get fired for sexual harassment in the work place.’

‘I think you’ll find I am extremely professional’ shouted Jimmy

Noah was followed by Courtney Sui who was best friends with Laura and Alanna, the three were inseparable, the three amigos if you will. She was carrying a black leather handbag with a few stickers on it, one saying ‘I Love Cotton Candy’ and the other saying the title of a movie called ‘The Number 23’. She answered Jimmy with ‘And what about the time you whispered ‘Have you got those files for head office, GORGEOUS’ in Alanna’s ear’

Alec piped up, ‘you said what to my wife’

Jimmy runs back into his office. Then Rory and Kirsten come out of the elevator. Rory was carrying his things in a bag from the North Bay convenience store and Kirsten came in walking like a supermodel pushing her freshly blow dried hair up.

‘Morning everyone looks like we are gonna have great weather today’ said Rory.

‘I know it hasn’t been like this in a long time.’ Added Kirsten a new intern at FFN who immediately made her presence known with bleach blonde hair a pencil skirt, but despite this not many seemed to be that bothered by her except Rory.

Just then Alanna yells out a cry of pain. ‘Ow, God that really hurt.’

Alec responds, ‘Are you are right Al’. Al was his nickname for Alanna.

‘Yeah just a papercut, I’ll just put a plaster on it.’

At that moment, a small tremor shook the whole building, while it was just a small tremor it was considerably larger than the one Kirsten felt earlier.

Noah calms the room by saying ‘It’s alright everyone this building was designed to be earthquake proof, think you jinxed us there Rory, still it was just a small tremor.’

Alec reassures Alanna and says ‘Is everyone alright…’

Then a much larger earthquake strikes the building and the area surrounding, and this time it wasn’t a tremor it was a full-scale earthquake and a large one at that at least a 9 on the Richter scale.

The entire floor shakes, Joe grabs Bailey and Gabby and the group try to get under the desks. There is a loud thud as the elevator crashes to the bottom of the elevator shaft. Meanwhile, Jimmy is still in his office and tries to get out down the elevator.

‘Jimmy get down under a desk quick.’ Shouted Alec who tries to make his voice heard over the rumbling.

‘Are you stupid this is a huge earthquake this building won’t survive it we have to get out of here now.’ Screeched Jimmy who hasn’t realised the elevator has crashed to the bottom. All of a sudden, the sprinkler system comes on soaking Jimmy (the others are under the desks). The door opens for him and he takes a step. He sees that the sprinkler system has malfunctioned causing water to fill the elevator shaft. The others are yelling for him to stop what he is doing but he cannot hear them, either that or he isn’t listening. The inevitable eventually happens he loses his footing because he is soaking wet but manages to hang on to the sides of the elevator entrance but then the elevator doors malfunction and slam shut severing his foot and pushing him over the edge. He falls from a great height to the bottom of the shaft and crashes straight into the elevator. All the group can hear are his screams and a sudden splash as he smashes into the bottom. I think it is a safe to assume he did not survive that fall and if he did he would have hit the water so hard he would have drowned despite there being little water down there.

‘Ahhhhhh’ screams Kirsten, while the others shout ‘NO’ and other various things.

‘he’s right you know the building is earthquake proof but something like this could tear it to the ground.’ Said Noah in a worrying tone.

‘Alright we have to get out of here, the building is holding but it won’t hold for that long, everyone out from underneath the desks there has to be a way down to the bottom floor.’ Alanna shouted as if she was an army sergeant.

The 11-remaining people in the office get up from underneath their desks and look frantically around the room until Joe spots a fire escape.

‘There’ yells Joe pointing to the fire escape. With no other choice, the group run towards the fire escape. But a large chunk of the ceiling falls and crushes Noah’s leg. Before Noah can yell out for help, a metal rod that is in the concrete to help earthquake proof the building, falls with some of the ceiling impaling the back of Noah’s head. Kirsten witnesses this while the others try and head out the door. The sprinkler system as left a thin layer of water near to wear Kirsten is standing and the earthquake has left loose wires hanging down. A part of the ceiling falls in front of Kirsten causing her to fall back into the large puddle, at the same time the loose wires fall to the water electrifying the water, killing Kirsten. This has all happened fairly quickly and before the rest have gotten out of the fire escape.

‘Oh, my God Kirsten, Noah’ screamed Laura, although she was devastated she had lost two friends she continued on out the door.

Alec, Alanna, Joe, Gabby, Bailey and Laura have made it out to the rather large fire escape but Courtney, Rory and Matt are still in the office avoiding falling debris. The floor behind them starts to collapse and Rory is pushed down by a flying desk coming at him at top speed. The desk that flipped to Rory had a pot of pencils and sharp object that also flipped sending scissors and pencils flying into Courtney’s right eye. The two events occur almost exactly at the same time it’s nearly impossible to tell who died first. ‘No’ shouts Matt as he is standing less than 10 feet away from the escape exit.

A small chunk of ceiling crushes his leg and he lets out a scream. It is however light enough for him to roll it off and begins to crawl towards the door.

‘Matt come on please don’t leave me like this, I love you.’ Yells Laura who is trying to reach out to him but at the same time being pulled back as the Baxter’s do not want her to go back in there.

Matt suddenly hears a creak and a crack and knows the floor is crumbling beneath him he knows he will not make it and whispers to Laura ‘I love you too’ and at that moment a ceiling piece crushes him and the floor gives way and he falls screaming to his death too.

Laura is devastated and quietly sits in the corner of the fire escape.

Alanna goes up to her and quietly says ‘Laura I’m so sorry he’s gone we have to get down to the floor. Please come on.’

Laura conjures up enough courage to get up but at that moment a window that is designed to be earthquake proof pops out of its frame and falls on top of Laura who is still standing at the edge and pushes her off the ledge.

‘Nooooo’ screeches Alanna, but it is too late as Laura falls straight onto the spiked fences that surround the perimeter of the building.

Alec realising, they have very little time, says ‘Gabby you get down and we will pass Bailey down to you.

The plan is a moderate success, Gabby begins to descend the climbing frame that is the fire escape, climbing down ladders and metal bars proves to be a hard task for Gabby when the ground is shaking so much and the rumbling causes her to fall half way down, she hurts her ankle so Alec sends Joe down before passing Bailey down. Joe successfully makes it down and Alec passes Bailey down successfully. He then nudges Alanna signalling that it is her turn to descend the metal structure. Alanna still in a state of shock gasps as her husband nudges her.

‘That’s it you’re doing a great job.’ Alec says reassuring Alanna as she begins to make her way down. Suddenly there is a jolt in the ground and the rumbling stops. The earthquake is over but the jolt has caused Alanna to fall onto the bottom ledge of the fires escape.  Windows glass breaks and smashes into her face and before she can get up thinking everything is alright the ladder above her brakes and plunges into her chest killing her instantly. The jolt has also damaged the lower part of the fire escape so there is now no way down and Alec is stuck.

Joe manages to call the fire department thinking nothing bad is now going to happen and that the earthquake is over. But before he can finish the call a shockwave ripples through the earth making the ground very unstable, cracks in the ground grow and open up and the two teenagers noticed the sign on the building before they went in saying that the building is earthquake proof but unfortunately the giant skyscraper next door is not and the very tall building begins to fall over as if a giant had pushed it. It falls onto the building Alec is still on and crushes him.

Gabby yells out in a state of shock ‘Ahhhhhh’.

Joe and Gabby grab hold of each other and Bailey as the aftershocks continue causing what remains of the building to fall to the ground where Joe and Gabby are standing. Just as the fire department arrive a large chunk of the building that was not crushed by the other building falls on top of all three. The fire department manage to pull a severely injured Bailey out of the rubble but before they can get to Joe and Gabby, who are amazingly still alive despite having a large amount of debris fall onto them, another piece of debris crushes their heads.

Gabby and Joe exchange a look rolled their eyes and sighed.

Towards the end of the 30-minute journey Gabby, gazing out the window with Bailey’s tail in her hair, begins to get an uneasy feeling that washes over her.
