The girl steps silently and slyly, her feet a complex movement of carefulness. She had entered the throne room easily, stealing the riches,  then leaving softly.
But now she was carefully leaving, the art of stealing was a delicate thing. It was also addictive. But it was her art.
The night sounds were music to her ears. Feeling the gold coins she stole, cold slabs that paid for her necessities. Tasting the rich dishes her stolen items paid for. Seeing the sight of so much booty that would become hers. Smelling the aroma of the wealthy perfume that she stole.
It is her life.
She is almost to the window in the corridor she had entered by. She is close to leaving this dark yet beautiful castle.
Then something happens.
She hears soft footsteps. She spins around.
A young man in his early twenties stares at her.
He is handsome.
He has hair dark as midnight, and skin pale as the morning fog. His dark eyes are glittering and intelligent, ancient and daring.
His eyes are hazel with flecks of black mixed in.
He has a lean frame, his hair is short and close-cropped. He wears clothes that a noble would. Rich clothing in dark colors.
His voice is charming, thick and soft. The sound of rumbling clouds and the strike of lightning. "Who are you?" It sounds like the man is accusing the girl.
She looks evenly at him, saying formally and boldly, "The Thief of Dawn, the Soundless Fox, the Prowler in the Night."
"Those are mere titles, girl," He whispers, his voice the sound of rustling leaves in the wind.
"I am Vex." The girl makes a mocking flourish bow, "Vexing to the nobles and rich."
"It would be best not to mock me now, girl," He says softly.
"Why's that?" Vex continues daringly, "You're already going to kill me. You cannot do worst."
"Oh, but I can, Thief of Dawn." He turns away from Vex.
Now's her time to kill him. Him unknowingly making the stupidest mistake to do when an armed thief is in your sight. Why hasn't he called the guards yet?
Vex darts at the turned man, her knife ready to strike.
The man slowly turns back, but no horror shows in his light eyes.
The man grabs the blade, stopping Vex from striking him down. The blade does not even cut the man. Vex drops her dagger and steps back.
"What are you?" She asks.
The man smiles, "You may know me as Emperor A'karr."
"No," Vex whispers, horror streaking through her veins, "It can't be... It just... No..."
"Oh but I am him, little girl. I am A'karr. The Liar of Truths, the Son of the Moon, the Destroyer of Man, the Hero of all Demons. Those my titles, child. And I can torture your soul for eons. You will be at my disposal."
Emperor A'karr tightly grabbed Vex's forearm. She didn't even try to fight. How could she possibly of all things be found by A'karr himself?
How?
It didn't matter.
She was worse than dead.
Now, that's what mattered.
His touch was soft. She expected it to be a tight grip that burned. But his skin was soft and his grip barely pinched.
"But your supposed to be a ghoul ten feet tall and able to suck out the souls of innocents." She whispers.
The man laughs richly, his laughter is warm and homely. This couldn't be A'karr. A'karr was not this nice. "Those are only stories, girl. Stories."
Vex was too shocked to understand much.
Suddenly, a woman with black hair and a tight black dress strode into the hall. "What is this?!" She demands.
"Peace, Death." A'karr says, "A thief is all she is."
Death had a thin face, her eyes silver and cruel. She stood stiffly. A small harsh smile plays on her lips, "What shall we do with this one?"
A'karr looks thoughtful for a moment before saying, "Bring her to the dungeons. I want to question her."
Death nods, though it was obvious a flash of anger corrupted her cool mask. She wanted the girl. She wanted to do her bidding.
Two more people come through the halls.
A young girl, who wore an elaborate silk dress with a silver necklace and a sapphire tear drop. Her hair was silver blonde. Her eyes the color of green velvet and sad, with black flecks mixed in, like A'karr's eyes. Sorrow.
A man in a blood red suit stood straight and had a scowl on his lips. His eyes were black and his hair was darker than midnight. His lips curled into a cruel smile that looked worse than his scowling. Agony.
Then, suddenly, out of the shadows appears a young man by looks. With dark hair and dark eyes and a hooked nose. He looks to be a scribe in his jerkin and looks to be Sorrow's age, nineteen, but Vex knows who he is. Shadow.
"What is this?" Agony asks, his voice pitiless.
"We've found a mouse trying to steal what is not hers." Death smiles wickedly, "And I think she should be given to my hands."
"I think not," A'karr's voice rangs loudly in the marble room, "I want to question this girl... it is nearly impossible to break into this castle without setting the..." He thinks for a moment before continue, "...the guards and wards, I suppose you can say."
Agony bows, "I believe you can trust me and Death to get the job done, Emperor."
"I think not," Shadow interjects.
A'karr tilts his head to the side, "What says you, Shadow?"
Shadow looks scandalized, "Well, certainly Death and Agony's methods are cruel! What if she doesn't know how she got in exactly? Just kill her? Why! We have to study the girl before she breaks down."
Sorrow nods somberly, "I agree with Shadow. Study the girl." Sorrow waits a moment before adding, "And I think you should do it, Emperor."
Silence settles on those words.
Lingering words.
Finally A'karr cuts through the silence, "Then it is settled?"
Sorrow and Shadow nod, while Death and Agony do so reluctantly.
A'karr waves his hand to Shadow, "Escort the girl, Shadow."
Shadow nods curtly, and grabs Vex's forearm harshly, his grip is more tight.
Shadow hurries Vex off to the dungeons. The dungeons are dark and cold. It is only lit by torches flickering against the wall. He throws her into one of the cells and locks the door shut.

There is a sharp click, when Vex realizes that there is no possibilty that she will leave this castle alive.
