Real Estate Maintenance
(
A lesson in permanence)

A white house exposed to a bleaching sun
may look like a classic shrine
to many elevated ideas found
amongst the walls that used to keep
the dirty parts of the world
on the outside.
Yet, if no-one takes care of the defenses
against the ruinous element, those walls will
begin to show tracks of the dirt
that gets washed from its top
by downpours,
which no-one can predict.

Mopping up the grimy water is all
one can do to stop the foundations
from rotting like water logged timber,
that crumbles from the inside.

New builders may be needed
to reinforce the flooring, the windows
that should open up to let in fresh air
to keep the heads inside clear.

But just left, as it is,
the house will turn a muddy grey,
like the bunkers of a forgotten war.
Slightly later, it will even show the layers of bricks,
dangerously porous and discoloured, that
once gave strength.

Nothing will be left of the former grandeur.
Turning the house into just another nondescript office,
as can be found all around the world.
