Championship Problems

GOAL! The buzzer goes off. The Knights just scored… on me. The score is now 2-2. I can hear people chanting “go Bears go!” At the last minute, we score and break the tie, 3-2 for us! The game ends and we won!

I walk into the changeroom with the rest of my teammates. We all congratulate each other, and head off. Before leaving the arena, I check to see what place we’re on. “11th place” it says. That means that in the next 2 weeks, we can only lose 2 times, because we have championships in 3 weeks. I head out with a smile. We won, again.

2 weeks later…

I run to the scoreboard to find out that we, The Mighty Bears, are in 5th place! We’re going to be in the championships! Then I remember that practice is in 15 minutes so I run off.

A few days later…

I’m at home watching hockey. The phone rings so I go and pick it up.

An annoying voice says, “Hello, is this Alex Price?”

“Yes.” I say.

“I have a really important thing to talk about.  How about we meet at McWendy's today at 3:00 o’clock.” says the annoying man.

“Ok, may I know what's the topic?” I ask.

But the man already put down the phone. I go back to watching hockey.

At 2:45, I lightly jog to McWendy’s. I find myself a table and wait. I wait for around 15 minutes, then finally someone sits across from me.  He had black sunglasses and was wearing a lot of black. I recognize his annoying voice right away. He starts talking.

“Let's get straight to it. I want you guys to lose against L.A. Astronauts. If you lose, I will give you 20,000 dollars.”

I can't say anything, I just sit there and stare in disbelief. I don't know what to say.

Finally, the annoying man says, “And if you win, you better watch out.”

He then leaves with a smirk. I sit there wanting to disappear. I go home and as I get there, I realise I’m almost late for practice. I start sprinting.

After practice, coach Darrell calls me to his office. I go in and sit down on his couch. He starts talking to me, but I can't hear him. All of a sudden I hear him say:

“I’m going to make you a second goalie for now.”

I walk out and think about why i'm a second goalie. Then it hits me. I was unfocused and let in a lot of pucks at practice because I was thinking about what had happened earlier. I try to forget about it but I can't.

1 week later…

We’re on our way to Los Angeles. I’ve stopped thinking about what happened last week. I picked a choice that I think is right, I’m gonna stop as many pucks as I can.

Few hours later…

We are finally here!

As we find where our change room is, I begin to feel nervous. All of a sudden it's time to go, time to beat The Los Angeles Astronauts!

I go in net and I can hear people chanting “Go Bears go!” I smile. The game starts. L.A. is pretty good but we’re better. A few shots go at me, but I stop them all. A few seconds left. 31...30...29...GOAL! We scored!

We go in for a break and I’m as happy as ever.

As we go out on the ice, I spot the “annoying” man. He sees me too and glares, the scariest glare I probably ever saw. But I don't mind. I go in net and start thinking about if I actually made the right choice, I throw the thought away, no time, the game is on! For a while nobody scores, everyone is skating back and forth. Before I can even blink, a puck gets shot at me and I don't save it. We end off second period at 1:1.

I get the motivation and finally go into third period.

The game is on, our team scores on the fifteenth minute and the crowd goes wild! Now the Astronauts are mad, but so are we! Just a few seconds left, 5...4...3...2...1… we won! Again.

As I get out of the change room, I can see the “annoying” man standing at the doors with two other men, waiting for me. I suddenly get nervous but I still get there.

The “annoying” man just says “wait here.”

I can see him talking to my coach, and at the corner of my ear I can hear him say “he’s driving with us.” I start to get really scared, I go back, but the two men stop me. I want to scream help, but nothing comes out of my mouth. I slowly walk into the car.

2 hours later…

We finally stop at a forest, no one is around, only me, the “annoying” man and the other two men.

Finally the “annoying” man starts talking. “Because you have denied my request, we are going to kill you.”

I freeze. I don’t know what to do. I wish I could run away, but there's nowhere to go.  All of a sudden I can hear police cars, lots of them. The 3 men start running away, the police run after them. I suddenly feel someone's hand on my shoulder. I turn around and see my coach smiling. He then asks me if I’m ok. I nod my head, still trying to figure out what happened.

“ I could see that something was wrong with those three men, so I figured we would follow them.” says my coach.

A police officer walks up to me and shakes my hand.

“You have helped us to catch these criminals, they robbed the bank last week. I sherriff Peter, thank you for helping us catch these criminals!”

“Wow I never thought they were criminals! If I knew, I would’ve told you right aways!” I finally manage to say.

As I walk into the change room, my teammates show me a picture of… well me, on a newspaper. “This goalie caught the criminals just like a puck!” it said on the front cover. I smile. I knew that I made the right choice, even there, in the middle of the forest. As I go to practice I smile, again (for like the 100th time) because I know that we are going to win the championships.

2 weeks later…

And we won the championships!

The end!
