Painted Smile

Can you see my painted smile,

Does it take you in?

Or can you get a kind of sense

Of the misery within?

Am I at least convincing you

With putting on this act,

Keeping my pain secret,

My integrity intact?

Just keep your glance from reaching up

And looking in my eyes,

Or then you might well see the truth

And unravel my disguise.

My mask must be successful,

My job is on the line,

I need to get you thinking

That everything is fine.

I have to keep you guessing

And must not let you see

That this depression is devouring

Every single part of me.
