CHAPTER I

Etta leaned closer to Perry she wanted to make sure she heard every word he was saying. She was having trouble accepting that these may be the last words she would hear him say. She had not left his side sense the Doctor said there was nothing else they could do for Perry and said he had very little time left.

Perry gathered what little strength he had left he could feel the life in him slowly fleeing from his body. He looked at Etta with eyes filled with love and regret. He had left Etta long before the cancer had started spreading through his body.

"Etta I want you to know that I love you and the children, and I have never been with another woman; you are my first and only love Etta."  "I wish I had listened to you when you asked me to retire. I was just making sure you and the children had everything you would ever need, Etta please forgive for being a fool and not being a good husband and father.  Money became my Mistress Etta the more I made the more I wanted."

Etta tightened her grip on her husband hand lovingly, "Perry you were all that I and children ever needed, she moved her hands towards her husband face and cupped it into her hands. Perry you are a great man and me and the children are proud of you".Yes it was hard for me and the children when you were away, but our children have grown up to be just like their father". "Please tell them to start living their lives Etta, tell them to put their families first".

"Tell Perry he needs to spend time with his son, tell him don’t make the same mistakes I made with him. He will not like the idea that he has grown up to be like his father. Tell Morris to do whatever it is that will make him happy and tell Denise not to marry a man like me. Etta I want you to start living, where are the children I wanted to say these things to them Etta". He knew death was in his body, he was glad their children were not here to see him died.

"They were here earlier when you were a sleep; it’s very hard for them to see you like this". "I understand Etta I don’t want them to see me leaving them for the rest of their lives, you should leave Etta go home the hospital will call you".  " I want to be with you Perry." She motions to him to move over in the bed, he moved over as far as his body allowed. Etta laid down with Perry. Perry kisses her on the back her neck while saying "Etta I love you, thank you for being here with me. Perry drifts off into a drug induce sleep."

Perry’s career in banking took off when he graduated from college; he had a special ability to help banks to become more efficient and make  more money. He became a bank manager within one year after he had graduate.  The more promotions he got the less time he had to spend with her and the children.

Now he was dying from Cancer, all the money he had earned could not cure him. She thought about his wall of achievements, the wall that bear  his accomplishments and there weren’t any pictures of her and the children in his special room. She had tried to talk to Perry many times about retiring.  She recalled what he would always say; "Etta I have to make sure you and the children have everything you need. I don’t want you or my children to ever want for nothing".

She spoke softly to herself  repeating what she had said to Perry each and  every time, "Perry we  want something special and he would say what is it you and children want Etta?.I want my Husband and the children want their father".

Nothing in this world could replace you in our lives she would say. Perry’s work was the most important thing to him. She had played the roles of Mother and Father to their children. She had begged him many of times to let go of his obsession with his job. She felt as if she had loss him long before he was diagnose with Cancer.

Their marriage was in fragile state after Perry’s refusal to do what the Doctor told him to do, after he had suffered a heart attack several years ago.  Etta gave into sleep as she ends the conversation with herself.

Moments later Etta wakes up she could not feel Perry’s breathe on her neck. She started calling out to Perry and started moving out of the bed. She placed her hand on his chest and realizes that he was no longer breathing; she stood motionless like time had stopped. "Why Perry why did you have to leave us. I will never forgive you Perry".

Denise felt an urgency to be with her father; she was literally running through the hospital lobby, to the elevators. She pushed the door open and quickly walked into the room. I hope I am not too late Mom, Denise looks at her mother she could tell that her mother had been crying; before she could say another word her mother spoke." Your father has made his transition; I was just about to call you and your brothers".

Denise walks over to her father beside and glances upon his face. "How long ago did it happen momma? "I felt daddy leaving here I was trying to get here before he passed."

"It’s been about twenty minutes; the nurse asked me did I want him to stay in the room so the family could see him. I felt it was the right thing to do". Denise could no longer hold the tears inside; they begin to stream down her face as she touched her father’s face. Etta walked over to her daughter and wrapped her arms around her, she could not think of anything to say.

"What am I going to do without daddy momma we grew so close, now he’s gone"? "You will adjust just like you did when you were a child". Denise moves out of her mother arms, trying to calm the anger that was rising inside of her." He always came home to us momma; he’s not coming home anymore when are you going to forgive dad for being away from home"." I have tried Denise God knows I have; I am so angry with him right now, now he’s left me for good".

"I forgave daddy a long time ago for missing things that were important to me, when I realized how important it was to have a job to support a family. I understand why dad worked so hard. Get over it Momma you are being selfish". "I am not being selfish; I am hurting from losing your father long before today," Etta starts to cry.

Denise moves closer to her mother, she reaches out her arms to her mother Etta moves into her daughter’s embrace. "Momma you are going to make yourself sick carrying that anger around, do you want to leave here too. I can’t deal with losing you too. Momma please forgive daddy, I am begging you to let it go".
