I went along to the poetry reading and was completely different to the others there.

I went along to the poetry night

In the city centre theatre

The room was packed pretentious

Red wine and small talk

Of holiday homes and France.

In my straight from work clothes and trainers

I lurk in the corner waiting for the reading.

They chatter, jumpers knotted round shoulders,

Great poetry they have written.

They boast of alliteration and simile

Metaphor and metre and meaning

They write poetry to show off to friends

At dinner parties over canapes.

I write poetry in lamp glow secret

Because inside I’m screaming.

They write in coffee shop windows

I sit down alone and open a vein.
