I wake up to Coda in my face grinning ear to ear. "Wake up! Wake up!" he chants. I grunt. "What?" I say with a sleepy voice. "Alyssa says somebody wants to adopt us!" he says, seemingly gleaming with joy. My face goes blank. A feeling of anxiety sprouts in the bottom of my stomach. Is that really a good thing? What if they aren't nice people. The dream comes back into my mind. What if that's who they are. Dirty, abusive slobs. What if that is who we are taken in by. How is that anything to be happy about. What if they don't love us.

I smile sympathetically. "Straighten up Raven. You have to be strong for Coda," I think to myself. "Hey R?" he said sitting down beside me on the bed. "Yeah?" I reply.

"What do you think it would be like, to, you know, have a different family. What if they don't love us?" he questioned.

"I'm sure that they'll love us just as much as mom and dad did," I replied, thinking I was saying that to make him believe it, but the more I thought about it, the more difficult it became for me to believe.

I moved my hand, waving it in an odd way. That was our way of saying, "hey wanna do the handshake?" He excitedly obliged.

That was a fairly good day. That night was our last night in the hotel with Alyssa. The next we would sleeping in unfamiliar beds in an unfamiliar house with people we didn't know even in the slightest.

Neither of us knew what was to come.
