Book Struck  or  Meet the Awful.

The author whose work I’d loved for years

Announced he was doing a book tour

With delight I saw he was coming to town.

I bought my ticket and read and waited

I had so many questions, comments

Suggestions and praise.

I joined the snaking line of people

We shuffled forward chatting

About the great man and his work.

My mind was racing, so much to say.

I was actually about to meet the man

Whose books inspired me to write.

Nice to meet you, I said warmly

Thanks, came the flat reply

As though I’d held a door open.

I shook his limp reluctant hand

He avoided my eager-fan gaze

I handed him my book.

Without moving the name sticker

He scribbled the title page

Like he saw signing for a package.

He tossed me back the novel

With a slam door shrug

And turned to the next in line.

Dismissed I headed for the exit

Feeling as though I’d been robbed

And more defiant than inspired.
