Puzzle

written by: Annette Smith

She sits alone in a large room only a single table and chair is in the room.  on the table is a puzzle she is doing.  The table is lit with a single light over the table, the rest of the room is dark.
she starts with the edge pieces like everyone else does. nothing is clear about what this puzzle is supposed to be.  She gets a little more of the puzzle put together but is isn’t clear what it is yet.  Right at that moment a door opens on the other side of the room.  On the other side of that door is an extremely long line of people.  At first it doesn’t make since why they are there, but when she looks closer at them she sees that everyone in this line is someone she has known in her life at some point or another.  It seems safe so she ignores them and works on the puzzle some more.  That's when the long line of people slowly begins walk closer to her.  The first one quietly walks up to the table and takes a single piece of the puzzle and throws it on the floor next to the table.  Before she could pick the piece up the next person does the same thing.  It goes on like that for a while until half the puzzle is on the floor.

During all of this she was still trying (in vain) to put the puzzle together.  It still isn’t clear at this point what the puzzle is.  Just as she was going to walk away from the puzzle the next person in line quietly picks a single piece off the floor and puts it back on the table.  She is shocked to see this but still doesn’t say anything.  The next person in line does the same and the one before.  It goes on like this until all the pieces that were on the floor were back on the table.

She is relieved at this point and puts more of the puzzle together.  At this point the puzzle starts to come into focus.  Even though she still wasn’t sure what it was she does see a dim idea of what she thinks it could be.

While she is putting the puzzle together the next person in line picks up a puzzle piece and puts it in the proper place in the puzzle.  It goes on like that for a while until half the puzzle is Put together.  At that moment she sees what she believes the puzzle should be and it shocks her.

The line of people stops momentarily and it gives her time to put more of the puzzle together.  She gets as far and three fourths of it together when the line starts again. At this point the people are taking pieces out of the puzzle and on the table next to the table.  It’s now that she gets angry and shouts out for everyone to leave her alone but they ignore her as if she isn’t saying anything.  then the line is over but by then the puzzle is taken apart and all the work she did seems to have gone away.

She is so angry at this point that she completely gives up and starts to walk away in defeat. but before she leaves the room a man walks in and puts the entire puzzle together for her. and it’s at this point she finally sees what the picture is. it was her. the man says nothing just nods at her to come with him and starts to walks away.  all that work to put herself together and it took this man only minutes to do the work that took her years to do
