In Asia, kung fu has been around for thousands of years. In Europe and America it was brought to the public by Bruce Lee's movies. Kung fu is much more than only a combat sport like boxing and wrestling, it's part of the culture and education in Asia. Meanwhile in America, in particular, Bruce Lee's movies were meant to entertain as action movies. It had to be a show to sell, like most sports, and had to be fun and exciting. Since Bruce Lee time, many martial art academies opened in western countries. And if the first generation of instructors teaching abroad were Asians, nowadays many of them are Europeans, Americans and Latinos. It has spread worldwide and some kung fu movie stars even moved successfully from Hong Kong to Hollywood to make action movies.

Jackie is the most successful of them. It should have been Bruce Lee, but his sudden death at an early age ended his career at the height of his stardom. Jackie did what Bruce would have done if alive, but not by trying to be the new Bruce Lee, simply by being himself. He found his own style, his own sense of humor. And even if he was not as impressive as Bruce as a martial artist and a fighter, he was very entertaining and funny. Probably funnier than Bruce could ever be.

With "A Touch of Zen" and a "Fist of Fury" he became the biggest kung fu star in Hong Kong. He was the "Little Tiger of Canton", "Fist to Fist" with "The Golden Lotus". He was so versatile that he could be a "Drunken Master" and a "Spiritual Kung Fu" master at the same time. He was able "To Kill with Intrigue" "Magnificent Bodyguards" and "Shaolin Wooden Men" in the same movie without looking weird. He had "The Private Eyes" to be a "Killer Meteors". It was a lot of fictional fights scenes using special effects. But "The Young Master", Jackie, was a "Dragon Lord" with a "Heart of Dragon". When he moved to Hollywood, he learned the American way. He liked the "Pom Pom" Girls, the "Police Woman" who fined him for driving without a driving license, the "Winners and Sinners" he met in Los Angeles, "The Cannonball Run" to attend the Super Bowl, and "Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars",... I mean, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"... America was all about "Miracles" for Jackie.

In America, Jackie was "Mr. Nice Guy". He believed in "Chinese Zodiac", in "Wushu" and "Shaolin". During "Rush Hour" he became a "City Hunter". "Once a Cop" came to him with a "Crime Story", and Jackie was so peaceful, like "A Kid from Tibet". He told him to calm down and practice "Kung Fu Yoga". Another time, in a "House of Fury", some "Shanghai Knights" wanted to fight him. He used the "Medallion" from the "Island of Fire" to create a "Vampire Effect" to defeat them. And when "The Spy Next Door", the "Little Big Soldier", and "The Karate Kid" altogether fought him, he was rescued by the "Legendary Amazons" led by "Mulan" his former girlfriend for another victory. Like a "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow", he survived every encounter using his secret techniques: "The Awaken Punch" and the "Fist of Unicorn". But his "Everlasting Regret" is the fight he lost against the "Kung Fu Panda". He could beat any martial artist alive as long as they were humans. But he couldn't fight against the "Dragon Blade" of the Kung Fu Panda, who dominated the most powerful technique ever: the "Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin". For a reason the pandas are sacred animals in China. Kung Fu Panda is the dragon warrior trained by Grand Master Oogway, the old tortoise. And even Bruce Lee would not be able to defeat him.

Let's leave pandas alone with their bamboos, so we can ask Jackie about the true meaning of kung fu:

"Kung fu lives in everything we do. It lives in how we put on a jacket and how we take off a jacket. It lives in how we treat people. Everything is kung fu."

It's not about fighting as most of us believe. It's about a life philosophy like Buddhism, Taoism or Confucianism. The spiritual part of kung fu is more important than the visible part, as the real power is from the soul, not the fists.

"The best fights are the ones we avoid."

The aim of martial art is to dominate yourself, not to dominate the others. It's a fight against yourself to control your spirit through physical training. Street fighters are trouble makers and the antithesis of martial artists. So, if street fighters want to fight with everyone they bump into the street, martial artists would do the opposite.

"I allowed myself to be bullied because I was scared and didn't know how to defend myself. I was bullied until I prevented a new student from being bullied. By standing up for him, I learned to stand up for myself."

It's all about fighting to protect the ones who cannot defend themselves. Martial art is not selfish, and would make sacrifices for the community safety and security. Martial artists are basically big brothers fighting for their little brothers.

"The children right now, the young children, everybody should go to a martial arts school. Why? Because as soon as they go to a martial arts school, they learn discipline."

And there's no miracle, that's how Bruce, Jackie and Kung Fu Panda learned discipline. And discipline is what makes the difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful one, a successful society and an unsuccessful one, a successful country and an unsuccessful one, a successful..., etc.

"So, goodnight Jackie. We all know that all the fights in your movies are not real. But anyway, who need real fights?"
