It was getting quite late by the time I finally arrived home from school and knew straight away that things were not right in the house, my parents had been arguing for the past few months now and it just seemed to be getting worse each time that I got home, I had no idea what the problems were but knew that it was starting to affect me and how happy I used to be.

I shut the front door behind me, dumped my school things on the floor in the passage way and went straight to my room, my parents probably did not even hear me get home because they were shouting at each other too much to even notice me anymore, turning on my IPod, I turned the volume up and laid down on my bed, I wished that my parents would not fall out, they had been married for fifteen years now and had survived so many disasters together and I so desperately wanted them to survive this, they had to be okay.

It seemed like hours before anyone realised that I was actually home, but there was a light knocking on my door.

“Sam, are you okay in there?” I heard my mum call out to me.

“I’m fine, thank you; it is nice to come home and straight to my room.”

“There is no need to be rude Sam, I am so sorry that we have been falling out recently but we just cannot agree on something, it’s not too serious.”

“Well it sounds serious to me Mum, every time I come home from school you two are shouting at each other.”

“I know but we are sorting it all out, now come on dinner is ready.”

She turned and left me on my own once again with my thoughts, I was really hungry but did not want to go into a room with so much tension in the air, but my stomach was making me go down there.

My parents were sitting at opposite ends of the living room, not speaking to each other, I could tell that my mother had been crying, her cheeks were all red and her eyes were puffy, it hurt me so much to see her like that, no one said a word to me so I just went into the kitchen and sat to eat my dinner, afterwards I made an excuse that I had homework to do and retreated back to my peaceful bedroom, no one batted an eyelid or argued it.

The days continued like this for a few more weeks before they decided that it was time to let me know what was going on and the news was bad, it was so horrible and it was going to affect me in a very big way.

I decided to stay later after school the next day, I knew that my parents were waiting to talk to me but I was not ready to hear what they had to say so I told them that I had drama class, they believed me but instead I finished school and went to sit on the beach for a little bit, we lived in Brighton and the beach was not far from me, I came here nearly every day because it was so relaxing to hear that waves crashing into the rocks and the seagulls squawking looking for food. As the street lights came on, I knew that I had no choice but to make my way home and find out what my parents wanted to talk to me about.

My parents were waiting for me when I walked through the front door, I did not like the feeling once bit, my parents had very serious looks on their faces.

“Sam, please come into the living room and sit down.” My father said.

“We have to have a little chat with you love, but I’m afraid that it is not very good news.” My mother added.

“Will one of you please just tell me what is going on, you have been shouting at each other for months, I know it’s not good, I am sick and tired of it all.”

“Your mother is moving out, she is going to London and you will be moving with her.” My father said.

“Thank you Tom, I could have said it a little bit better than that.”
“I am sure you could, why pussy foot around her, just tell her the truth.”

“Stop, both of you, what’s going on, are you telling me that you are both splitting up and will end up getting a divorce?” I shouted at them.

I could not believe what they were both just telling me, my parents, the two people I loved and trusted were leaving each other and Mum was moving miles away from the home I grew up in, the only place that I have ever known.

“Sam, I am so sorry but your father and I have had our differences for a long time now and we just cannot see eye to eye on things anymore and feel that it is best that we both live separately for a while.”

Just like that, my happy family were no more and I was expected to just go with my mother and be happy about it.
