Chapter 0

Madness dwelled within the darkness of the night, chaos cried out its unholy rule as its army of fire and death spread throughout the town. The psalm of carnage was sang by a choir of the dying citizens of Allenville as those damned enough to still dwell on the cusp of this ever devolving life let out their screams of panic. Through the sea of flames that gripped tightly to the homes of the men and woman, young and old of this Alabama native town, once a prosperous quaint little place, fitted only with a grand total of 2300 bodies once living and now dead or dying. Surrounded by gorgeous forestry that separated the homes, the trailer park, the market place and the schools.

A place where everyone knew everyone and the hands of an economic and physical growth gripped the town promising wealth to all; fed by a corporate sponsor and fitted for the past 15 years with a large area vastly deforested to build atop the bodies of the dead trees. It was a piece of a conglomerate empire, where young up and coming business men began their journey’s in hopes of gaining experience in the corporate world and taking it anywhere that promised more monetary gain. Their end goal ever present as a constant motivation across the Allenville bridge to the city where so many would finally make it out of this place and make real money. But their dreams were nothing but scum beneath the boot of catastrophe, laced together with the fabric of flames and corpses.

One soul sped through the city, through the flames that had taken dominion over the lives of the inhabitants. He passed the explosions of the few gas stations that existed in this place, passed the flailing frames of charred young children and mother’s crying out for some form of salvation, meeting only with the heavy strike of his car as he plowed through the bodies of those whose longing for survival had placed them in his path. It did not matter; the fire would have killed them if he had not.

He just sped on, the speedometer on his car reaching a mark of 120. He could feel the urgency of his current situation begin to build up within him as that stupid bitch in his back seat roused awake as the bodies of those he bulldozed through thudded beneath and across his cars frame.

“Spirits of Fire!!!!!” she said to him from the back seat of his car. Her flesh battered and bruised, and seared, she lay holding herself, quivering in the fetal position as she began chanting that same phrase: “Spirits of fire!!!!!!” on a quivering voice

Frank looked backed quickly and simply yelled at her to: “Fuck off!!!!!” as he continued onward through the flames, hoping to make it to the bridge of Allenville; the only way out of the town. He had been through enough, and surely despite his broken nose, the blood falling from lacerations on his charred skin, he would be sure to survive and leave the ashes of Allenville behind him.

It could not have been much of an astonishing sight to him, most minds would have thought as much at least, or perhaps many would believe it to initiate within him the onset of a fit of PTSD. But realistically officer Brady felt relieved for this man. What he might have been going through…whatever might have caused such a fatal schism of his mind as to cause him to wrap a chain noose around his own neck, he was now free of it. Of course, if you are one to believe in the existence of the divine and the evil then this man here hanging from the banister of the second story stair way with a thick chain around his neck, blood falling from the areas where the metal had broken through the skin…he had surely freed himself from one plain  which cursed his existence with misery to another which would plague him with one much more severe. The man’s eyes were wide open, his mouth dripping blood as well. He was a rich fucker that was for sure, a big house, should be a three story with how high the second floor was, three bed rooms. No furniture.

What kind of sorrows could this man’s life tell? Within a night of chaos filled with flames that touched the skies and the sounds of sirens reverberating through the once silent city. Fire men and cops sectioned off six square miles of the city when the fire first ignited throughout Allenville, Brady was not really sure how long ago. It felt like no more than two hours maybe, now the only people for that distance were service men and this guy. The solitude of this place, graced by the gentle platinum kiss of the moons light offered fables of isolation, pain and melancholy. Brady could almost hear it, as if the man were talking to him, telling him directly the pain that had wrapped that chain around his neck. He wondered, did the hanging man have something to do with the wildfire, had he started it?  Had he lost someone and  did his resulting despair simply boil over at the same time of another man’s anger? Perhaps his death, his sadness was simply so great that God himself was enraged upon having to watch his fall and the fire was a simple characterization of Gods own fury. Brady had looked through the apartment already and now he could only look up to the body. There was nothing there, no items to show that he had anyone, no chairs, no television, no clothes save for the ones that he wore on his back. The place looked renovated, brand new. Maybe this guy did not even live here.

The sounds of cries caught officer Brady’s attention accompanied by the screech of tires, the cry of a partner’s name all following the shattering of glass echoing in duet with that of metal slamming against metal caused him a sudden panic! He turned and saw a car slam at full speed first into two officers, pancaking their bodies into the side of their police cruiser, killing them instantly! Their blood and bodies splattering against the side decorating both cars scarlet with chunks of their gore. Both cars being forced headlong a few inches before the cruiser flipped to its side, the civilian car flipping upward, lifting high over the cruiser and landing upside down on the other side! As the car flipped a small frame could be seen ricocheting through the windshield, flying forward for an astonishing distance before slamming through the glass of a small convenience store.  Brady rushed over to the scene with a gun drawn. E.M.T’s and paramedics following close behind the officers. Once the scene was cleared as safe, with only an old man in the now nearly flattened piece of metal. His body looked to be nothing but a humanoid piece of lacerated burned meat. The Paramedics ushered the officers out of the way as they attempted to work at finding a way to get the man out. Officer Brady ordered another team into the store to see that no one was hurt.

Officer Hicks made his way into the building with 3 E.M.T’s along with 2 Deputies behind him. They went looking through the store, wondering what may have been forced to plow itself though its glass frame, perhaps a body, yet they found nothing. No destruction from what flew through the window save for the glass shards that littered the floor. The drawers were untouched, nothing spilled over, nothing broken or torn, it was as if the store was the same as the store clerks had left it once they clocked out that evening. Hicks was baffled at the sight but he had seen stranger things in his line of work.

“Hicks” Deputy Hernandez said from behind him, her voice a panicked whisper. He could hear the click of her holster as she drew her gun. Hicks turned as he heard three shots fired, the E.M.T’s all screamed, the deputies turning to see what the situation might be. Hicks following suit catching a scant glimpse of what seemed to be a young girl before her body became a beacon of hells own wrath! A pillar of fire reaching high with the girls now burning frame being the source, expanding out, leaving Hicks and his group looking in awe for only a moment as their bodies were quickly engulfed in the fires of the great explosion! And as those from the outside looked out to the pillar of fire reaching high into the blackness of the night! Looking then to the wildfire burning brightly and reaching out to meet with its kin that had just come into birth. The onlookers all held within their hearts, amidst the fear, the panic one simple question that  graced their lips: "What the fuck?".
