Ester and Chase sat in the alleyway. It was twilight, and they were counting the few coins they had scavenged the day before. They were not stupid, both about 12 years old. They were smart and cunning. Both were also very sneaky, always able to steal a piece of bread or two.

"only fifty three cents," Ester sighed.

"Its ok, I have this," Chase reassured her, pulling out two fresh loaves of bread.

" Chase, thank you," Ester said, for no other words of gratitude would fit.

Chase nodded his head in response. They sat in that ally, eating their bread. Then they lay their heads on the moist ground, and drift off to sleep.

Ester felt a smack on her head and opened her eyes, confused.

"move!" hissed a voice. Ester was still confused, and the thing kicked her in the head.

"do i need to repeat myself peasent? Move!!!"

Ester stood up, still processing what happened.

Then she turned around, and kept walking. Then she ran. Then she sprited. Until she found the house. Her house. And she ran up the creaky porch steps. And she heard a ladys voice. Ester smelt fresh bread.

The door opened and she was embraced in a hug.

"Jack! Esters here! she's back!" her aunt squeezed her harder, and Ester felt herself smiling and crying. She was home. She was home. And she was free. Free of the burdens. Free of hunger. But now she imprisoned, but in love. in warmth. And that was all that mattered.

Ester was free.
