Chapter 1: Pheonix

A single lone Vampire was a weak Vampire. That’s what they always said, it’s why Vampires have families and covens. I don’t consider myself to be a weak Vampire, but I am alone.
I used to be Alice Vatore, a normal human until I was turned by a disgusting Vampire who ran by the name Vex. Everyone called him Vex, because it had been given to him by his creator. That’s how it worked in the Vampire world. Everyone was given a name and accepted it as their new life. Many of the freshly turned rejected the tradition, I had not.
Vex had not meant to turn me, it had been a complete accident, or as I like to call it a horrible mistake. Vex was what the Vampire community called a Rogue, a Vampire who didn’t follow our laws or rules. He’s the kind you see in movies, snapping necks, torturing people and feasting on entire towns or families.
The Vatore family, my family was no different to any other. Vex had decided their was something about us that he liked, that was our death sentence. He slaughtered my entire family, and assumed I was dead as I bleed out on the floor. There is only one way to become a Vampire, you must drink Vampire blood. I did just that. It was not on purpose, see during the attack I had bitten Vex in my panic. The bite was so harsh it drew blood, yes, Vampires have blood. I had accidentally swallowed it somewhere along the line without Vex thinking much of the bite wound. So as I bleed out his blood twisted and turned into my stomach. When my heart stopped, instead of remaining dead with the rest of my family, I had awoken, awoken as a Vampire.
I had tried for many years to hunt down and kill Vex but the fact where simple, he had a hundred years experience I just didn’t have. I couldn’t kill him.
The only good thing that came of my long, and dramatic attempts to take him out was my reputation. Everyone knew who I was, it started of simple, they called my Vex’s girl. Soon the name morphed into Vex’s little monster, then Vex’s bane and before I knew they had named me Scarlet. Scarlet for all the blood I had seen, and the countless more I had shed trying to tear down his walls, families, covens, guards and even him.
I was no longer Alice Vatore, I was Scarlet. Scarlet the vengeful Vampire.
I knew deep down inside that I would never manage to kill Vex on my own, for every hundred years I gained, he’d still be a hundred years ahead. I could chase him into the future, or I could repeat his past, but I could never outstep him. It was a painful fact.
I was wise enough however not to request help. The Vampires that already existed knew well of my reputation and were eager to use my bloodlust to their own advantage, and I’d never doom another person to an eternity on earth. Or that’s what I had thought. See the thing we forget is that the world doesn’t revolve around the single soul. What we decide can not always be put into practise, and one Jacob Lian had proven that to me the day I turned him. It had all started many weeks before I had even laid a hand on him. Jacob Lain was in every right human and he had very human problems. He had managed to get himself on the bad side of some very bad people. Merciless people. I had only noticed myself since I tend to live out my days slinking from alleyway to alleyway to avoid the hot and burning sun.
Jacob Lian had stumbled in there while running away from these said people. Hearing the heavy footsteps I had slunk deep into the corner of the dark alleyway concealing my presence by stopping my breathing.

The one who had followed him in showed a malicious intent. Now, don’t take me for a fool. I didn’t rush in guns blazing to save a stranger. Not straight away. I’m not supposed to exist after all, revealing I’d been there the whole time without notice was no way to abide the Vampiric laws. However when Jacob whimpered as a knife was pressed to his throat my ridiculously human emotions got in the way. See, that’s the problem with Vampires who are created and left by their creator. We don’t grow up as Vampires, we sort of wake up the same with powers and a thirst for blood.
I ended up walking out of the corner at inhuman speed and throwing the knife at the wall. I’d never seen such a scary guy run so fast, one minute he was in front of me, the next his human legs had him halfway down the street. Jacob seemed to frozen in place, his mind was running a thousand miles a minute. It struggled to process where I came from, how I moved so quick, and most importantly who I was.
‘Who are you?’ he asked in a shaky breath.
‘Scarlet’ I told him as I walked away, forcing my limbs to move at the pace humans commonly moved at. It was something I had not done in a while. Hunting Vampires takes a little more haste than you’d expect. Just because we have all eternity doesn’t mean we like to take life at a slow pace. It tend to have the opposite effect, with so much free time on their hands Vampires are constantly on the move finding new and extravagant ways to spend their endless supply of time.
‘Scarlet who?’ the fool asked as he followed me. It truly was a foolish thing to do.
‘Just Scarlet’ I told him as I turned the corner hoping to rid myself of the boy. Of course calling him was a boy was a hypocritical thing to do, when my body had stopped aging around a year before the age he is now, but then you’ve spent the last thirty years on the same endless hunt, everyone seems like just a child. I lived to many years already and have not even reached the expected age for someone of my country and previous social status.
‘How can you be just Scarlet?’ he asked.
‘How can you lack common manners?’ I retorted. He rubbed the back of his neck and gave me a sheepish smile.
‘Sorry Scarlet, I guess you just surprised me’ he gave a short laugh ‘It’s not often I find help in an alleyway’.
‘How often do you spend time in alleyways?’ I respond coldly. I had no interest in befriending a human. They were so fragile, so easy to break. Any Vampire with anything small thing against me could snap him in two if they decided he was important to me. I didn’t save him so I could find him dead in the same alleyway a week later.
‘Only on Tuesdays’ he jokes.
‘Today is a Thursday’ I say bluntly.
‘I made an exception today’ he continued to attempt to joke with me. I brushed him off again.
‘I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to follow me around’ I tell him flatly. He gives me a skeptical look and raises an eyebrow.
‘What?’ I asked ‘I have a phone and I know the emergency number. I don’t feel like making a stalker so why don’t you just thank me for my timely entry and be on your way’ I tried to push him away, I really did. For a while it worked.
He thanked me, he left and we didn’t cross paths for a week. See this time he didn’t run into an alleyway, he was actually dragged into my territory. No, not by another Vampire, by the same human. See this human had no idea that this conveniently place warehouse was actually a place I had made my home. Abandoned, old, and rarely used for crime. Until this fateful day. It seemed Jacob Lian was just drawn to my natural element of danger. The guy from the alley dragged the unconscious Jacob into the center of the floor and tied him up to a chair, I actually watched from a distance at the start. If the situation did not become life threatening I would stay out of the way. It was suspicious enough that I had stopped him the first time but to be in the right place at the wrong time once again was surely to arouse a few questions.
Fate was never that kind. It started of pretty classic, like watching an action movie. Few hits to the face to wake him up. Few more hits just for fun. The usual villain type. It wasn’t until the guy pulled out a knife that it peeked my interest. I had almost mistaken it from the knife he had pressed against Jacob’s throat, until I realised he had left it behind when he fled. I assumed this guy just had a thing for the particular style. He decided that slitting Jacobs throat was not a move he was going to attempt this time, and lightly dragged the blade along his leg, not yet applying pressure.
‘Jacob Lian’ our Villain said with a smirk ‘I was going to just kill you, but after the way your girlfriend treated me, I thought I’d send you crawling home to her’ he pushed down on the blade and cut into the jeans he was wearing.
Jacob stared at him remaining silent. I guess even he knew when talking was not in his best interest. The guy cut into Jacob’s leg and let out psychotic laugh. I was about to jump in when what would of appeared as a blur to the human eye shot out and knocked the Villain flat. None other than Vex was sitting atop the man with his own sadistic smile.
‘Hello McGail’ Vex laughed ‘I’ve been looking for you all day’.
I couldn’t help but snarl when Vex entered the room, a surge of hatred ran through me like fire in the veins. This caused Jacob who was pulling a face of agony - he had let out a scream when the knife first cut into him- to whip his head around and look at me. He recognized me immediately. Oh boy, now I have to do something.
I walk out of the darkness and stand in plain view.
‘Oh Scarlet’ Vex smiles ‘This is where you’ve been the past year, I hope you weren’t planning on stealing my lunch’.
‘You can have the filth you’re sitting on’ I coldly, kicking a piece of rubbish to the side as I stalked over. ‘This’ I say pointing to Jacob ‘is mine’.
Sure Jacob had no idea what I was talking about, and I do realise it sounded like I planned on eating him, but the best way to tell a Vampire to back off is to lay your claim outright. We have long lives but we like short conversations. Like I said, we like to live fast pace. We don’t have super speed so we can live a life of leisure.
‘Oh Scarlet’ Vex almost sings ‘I want to know what you plan to do with the poor man’.
‘Does it matter to you Vex?’ I ask with as much hate as you can put into such a normal sentence.
‘Everything you do reflects on me, even your several attempts on my life’ Vex says, looking at me with glowing red eyes.
‘Are you angry Vex? Does your dead lackeys upset you? Does the covens I wiped out hurt you?’ I spat at him.
‘Scarlet, Scarlet, Scarlet, you’re still mad, and here I had thought we were finally even’ Vex frowned ‘I killed Alice Vatore’s family, and Scarlet killed my Coven. We are even Scarlet’.
‘I’d sooner snap your neck then start a truce’ I growled at him.
‘But would you sooner die than work with me? You wouldn’t have the power to snap necks if I hadn’t given it to you’ he says, before calmly biting down on the neck of “McGail” who had been struggling underneath him.
Jacob gagged in the background with tears pricking his eyes. He was obviously disgusted by the scene before him. I could not judge, Vex was a messy eater who enjoyed watching blood spill over. He liked mangling the neck and mauling the victim. He was commonly called Vex the Butcher behind his back, since no one was guts to say it to his face.
I wondered what they called me most frequently, since I had already caught wind of a few nicknames I had earned myself.
‘Oh, uhm Scarlet, are you going to hurt him or do I have to?’ Vex says looking up at the severely traumatized Jacob Lian. ‘You know you can’t just let him go’.
‘If you had been smarter with your entrance and not opened McGail up in front of him he would of been fine!’ I argue with Vex.
‘You know for the past three decades you’ve been screaming at me, even when you’re being held by guards, even when you’re chained to walls, when you’re in cages, and now even when you’ve interrupted the best part of my day. Lain was going to be murdered today one way or another. It could have been McGail here, it would of be me, or it could be you’ Vex said, getting up off McGail and stepping over his dead body to walk over to Jacob.
I snarled at him, baring my fangs. Before Vex had laid a finger on Jacob, I had thrown Vex across the room.
‘Look at you’ he laughed from across the room, having landed perfectly on his feet. ‘You are getting stronger. Uh, but what to expect from the same girl who bit me when I attacked her family. Shame that is, you becoming a Vampire and all. Walking eternity all alone. That’s what they call you, you know. Scarlet the Walker’. He stalked back over to me and gave me one solid shove with his right hand.
I was not the experienced or elegant fighter Vex is. My fighting style was quite brutal since I’d never been taught. I rammed, quick, flailed, bit, maimed, clawed and always made the first move, but I was never good a counter attacks or winning a fight I couldn’t win with the element of surprise, or an epic first move.
So naturally I slammed into the wall on the other side of the room with a loud bang. Picking myself up I gave a loud snarl and launched myself through the air.

The two of us tore and snarled, hissed and clawed. Or rather I clawed and and attempted to tear, while I gained numerous cuts and bruises and Vex stood there looking somewhat relaxed. He was showing of for our audience.
‘Oh I have an idea’ the psychotic Vampire shouted, ‘how about I tear your human apart, and we see if you can put him back together again!’.
Before I had time to move Vex’s superior powers had him at Jacob and tearing him up.  He was throwing Jacob around, clawing, tearing, biting and kicking. He was moving so fast I didn’t even know how to get between the two of them. He is moving faster than the human eye could process. It’s a normal Vampire trate. Moving faster than I could keep up with was an acquired skill. Vampires bodies didn’t have the limits humans did. We could train to ridiculous lengths. Gaining more and more power. There was no end game. No level one hundred game over well done. Instead we had the ability to get better and better. Vex was naturally faster than other Vampires, and seeing it as his skill and advantage he had honed the skills for the past century and a half, give or take.
By time I had reached Jacob his heart had stopped and his body was shutting down. I tore my own open in my haste, tearing it open with my teeth. I don’t know what it was that made me save him. I had always swore that I would never doom another soul to wondering eternity alone.

I looked back at Phoenix, and decided he would not wake up for a long time, and since night had fallen the time I had left before most people where home was running short. I raced out at my inhuman speed, and looked for someone who had been foolish enough to stay out late enough and venture close enough. As it was dark I could move on rooftops without burning. I was silent, I was quick, and I was above the general line of site.
A young male was walking home alone, having split of from his friends. I smelt the air, and decided that there was no alcohol in his blood, and had no drugs in his system.
I jumped down and landed in front of him, there was no reason to pretend I wasn’t about to do what I was definitely going to do.
I opened my mouth and bared my fangs before biting deep into his neck and sucking harshly at the blood. When he lost consciousness I let go of his mouth that I had covered to muffle any screams he may have had. I let him go and dropped him onto the ground. The bite wound was clean and not obvious. My haste had left a red ring, but that didn’t exactly scream Vampire to most people. I left him where he was, knowing he’d remember nothing when he woke up. They never did.
