Chapter One

It All Starts Now

“I guess what I’ve wanted so much was someone who loves me enough to match my effort.”

“C’mon Joey, time to go you're going to miss the bus!” my mom called from across the room. I fixed my hair in the mirror once more, making sure every single piece of hair was on the right side of my part. I pranced into the kitchen and grabbed my bag. It felt like there was a hurricane of butterflies swirling around in my stomach.

“Uhh… Joetta, let’s go!” My dad whispered in my ear softly. I nodded my head and strapped my bag around my shoulder, and headed toward the garage door.

When we arrived at the bus stop, I was getting more and more nervous about what could possibly go wrong at this nightmare of a school. I was trying my best to hide my face expression, from my parents especially my mom. It was like she could look inside me and see what I’m really feeling! “Don’t let your anxiety get the best of you, ok Joetta?” My mom questioned. I looked at her, then back at the ground, How did she know? I responded quickly, and quietly

“Ok…” My voice started to drift off. In the distance I could hear the wheels of the bus screeching against the pavement. The sound got closer and closer, until the bus finally halted to a stop at me and my parents feet. Those big yellow doors swung open, the bus driver looked at me funny too. It's almost like some dark force was sucking me into a nightmare.

I looked out of one of the windows and the sun shone bright in my eyes, temporarily blinding me. I look down and blink a couple times. I looked next to me, noticing for the first time that Erin and Carol were sitting right beside me.

The sun was shining bright against the school roof as I moved towards the door. I was in intermediate school now. We were the youngest again. New school, new world. I walked with my head low to the ground straight to my classroom. I knew exactly where it was. I had met my teacher a few days before, so she already knew a few things about me, and I knew a few things about her, too. “Welcome everybody, come on in!” my teacher told us in a perky way. “Find your seats” She gestured to all of the desks.

I sat down without speaking a word. I could feel something, like another person breathing on my neck. I was petrified to look up at the nasty smirk someone was giving me. But to my surprise I looked up and saw a smiley, sweet face. It was a girl, and she was smiling at me, weirdly. I read her name tag when she wasn't looking, It  said Erin Kohls. I looked at who she was talking to, guess who it was… Adam Luciani, the most annoying person in the whole school if i had to guess. I’ve known him since 2nd grade, and let me tell you he is not a good kid.

I started to look around at the rest of my class and suddenly froze. I saw a freckled, black haired boy. He was ADORABLE. Oh by the way, I ADORE all kinds of guys with freckles. I could hear the angels singing in the back of my head. For a second, I thought, do I like him?

For a second I had forgotten about her. Harper Matthews, probably the most popular girl I know. Every guy falls deep under her spells like she’s a siren singing the sailors deep into their doom, and I mean DEEP. They all see this beautiful, sweet kind girl but really she’s a devil brought up from Hell. She sat right in front of him. Quite honestly I didn't even know his name yet, but I knew, for sure I liked him.

I turned back around in my seat, i didn't want him to catch me staring. But the feeling of looking right into his deep blue crystaleyes, made me feel like I was getting hypnotized. Of course I wasn't going to make any human contact with him,  AT ALL. I was too nervous I would throw up on him from being too nervous. I know it sounds crazy, but I was still afraid.

“Joey?, Hello?” I could hear a voice trying to call out to me, but I figured it was just an angel. But then I realized it was not angel , It was Adam.

“Huh?” I questioned

“What were you looking at?” he responded to me. I think my brain had stopped working because I couldn't get one word out of my mouth.

“Oh nothing.” I lied

“You sure?” he ensured

“Yeah…”  my voice drifted off

“Ok” he replied awkwardly. It felt like he was waiting for me to respond. I looked over. Erin was staring at me like I had something on my face. I just turned back around to see Harper. In my opinion Harper is a real jerk. When she came into our school last year, she tried to steal my best friend, Riley. Then I looked in front of her to see that freckled face. But, I realized that he was gazing into Harper's eyes. This wasn't a good sign AT ALL. There goes another boy I like falling into her spells and tricks.

I couldn't watch any longer, so I decided I was going to introduce myself to Erin. I decided this so quickly that I had regretted it after I did.

“ Hi my name is Joetta, nice to meet you -” I cut myself off  because she would think I was a creep or something if I just knew her name out of the blue.

“Oh hi! My name is Erin, Nice to meet you.” She seemed very nice and sweet. But I was afraid she would be just like Harper. I thought those exact words when I met Harper. I can’t get too close with Erin until I know she is nice for real. I looked over at Harper one more time to see her laughing with the boy. They were already friends. Just my luck, and I haven’t even made a friend yet. I replayed that moment in my mind, and I could feel the chills run down my back thinking of what they could be in the future.
