It was a cold December night, I was sitting on my front porch sipping warm tea with Gram, watching the misty sky shower sprinkles of snow unto the pavement. "Gram?" I spoke, breaking the silence between us. "Yes dear? What is it?" "Do you ever think about grandfather, like do you ever miss him?" I asked in a hushed tone, knowing Gram wouldn't react well to my question. "No. Of course not. I haven't thought about him in 20 years, why must you ask such a thing?" She replied, frustrated by my questions. "Well, he hurt you didn't he? When he ran off with Ms. Sa-" "You stop right there, I don't wanna hear no more about your grandfather, he hadn't anything to do with my life, nor yours, it's best you forget he exist." Gram arose from her rocking chair, almost shoving it back into the fragile window behind us. I watched silently as Gram retreated back into the house, before focusing my attention on a dark figure sprinting towards me. I squinted my eyes to discover that the figure, was a man, more specifically, my boyfriends father. Before long, he was standing at the steps of the front porch breathing heavily and murmuring words over and over again, but it didn't take me long to realize what he was saying, "Come quickly, it's happened again." I rushed into the house grabbing a pair of old rubber rain boots and dashing out the door, running just ahead of my boyfriends father, thickened snowflakes stuck to my eyelashes and made it almost impossible for me to see, but I was determined to get to Sam. About a mile down the road, Sams house came into view and I could hear the sound of screaming and things crashing, being thrown around and broken. I slammed open the front door, as a vase was being thrown against a wall, inches away from the right side of my torso, I rushed over to Sam and wrapped my arms tightly around his waist. He wrapped his arms around me, tightly, clawing at the cloth on my back, he buried his face in my shoulder, screaming loudly, barley being muffled. I stroked his long black hair, telling him everything would be alright. A few minutes went by and I could feel his breathing calming down. I sat him down on the living area floor, and looked deep into his eyes. "What caused it this time?" I inquired, speaking softly as to not frighten him. "It was them again.. the voices, they keep getting louder, they won't stop." I glanced over to his father who was standing in the doorway, a concerned expression painted unto his face. "That's quite alright dear," I removed a lock of hair that was stuck to his face, glued to his skin with warm tears, "They'll go away soon, they always do." I looked him in the eyes as his expression softened to a small smile forming on the upper left corner of his mouth. He leaned towards me, as I filled the gap between us, he kissed me passionately, his lips soft and warm. "Thank God you came, otherwise..." he trailed off looking towards the ground. I softly lifted his chin up, making it to where his eyes met mine again, "You shouldn't have to worry about that, I live close by, I'm always ready to come when I'm needed." He gently nodded then got up and went to his room, me following close behind. He closed his door then flopped unto his pillow top mattress patting the spot next to him, that was reserved for me. Walking slowly and quietly, I layed in the spot next to Sam, resting my head on his shoulder, as he wrapped his arms around me, his embrace strong and warm. We layed next to each other silently before he broke the silence between us. "Hey, Lizzie?" He asked, politely and calm. "Yes dear?" "I have something I must tell you.." he trailed off, "I know we've only been seeing each other for three months as of yesterday, but you've done so much in my life, and you've impacted the way I've acted in a way nobody else could." I held my breath trying to prepare for what came next, "I love you Lizzie, I want to spend the rest of my life with you." I looked up at him, meeting his glare, "Will you be my wife?" He asked smiling, before pulling out the most beautiful ring, I had ever seen, coated with diamonds, and a aquamarine stone as the main gem. I held my breath as tears escaped my eyes and burned my cheeks. "Yes." I mumbled before having him place the ring on my ring finger. He kissed me passionately, but with a certain desire, causing fireworks to explode and butterflies to take flight, in my stomach. His hands traced my figure, and then the inside of my thighs, he kissed down from my lips to my neck, nibbling slightly, his fingertips tracing up my inner thigh, finding their way to my wasteband where his hand retreated into my pants, slowly making their way downwards again. I let out a slight moan before he got a little more rough. *** I awoke the next morning along side Sam, our clothes spread out on the floor, nothing but a thin white sheet to cover the both of us. He rolled over to face me before giving me a passionate kiss. "Good morning beautiful." His voice deep and his eyes glowing. I smiled back before getting up, and gathering my clothes. Just then his mother barging into the room in a furious rage. I quickly slipped on my jeans and t-shirt before running out of the backdoor and back home. A few hours later, a knock came about my door, and I opened it, shocked to see Sam, his cheeks red and his eyes shining. He'd been crying. I invited him inside where we retreated to my room. After a few deep breaths, he explained that his mother had found out about the engagement and had forbidden it, saying she had found a lovely girl for Sam, and that she would bring good wealth to the family. "Oh..." It felt as if my soul had just left my body, leaving nothing but a broken heart. "I want to marry you..." He spoke sternly, "run away with me Lizzie." I nodded then began packing my things, I was going to run away with him, no one would stop me. "Meet me at the barn, at 8pm. Tonight." I nodded in agreement before he kissed my cheek and left. I waited all day, excited to run away with the man I loved. At 8pm I arrived at the barn, but Sam was no where in sight. I walked around to the side where I saw a white sheet of paper, nailed to the barn wall, it read.. "- Lizzie I have decided to not runaway with you, but to instead go with the plan to marry the woman my mother picked out for me, I didn't want to tell you in person, but the truth is, I don't love you as I said last night. It was all but a lie, so I could finally get what I've wanted. You may return home. Oh and keep the ring. -xoxo Sam~" I fell to the floor, my eyes burning with tears, my stomach filled with a hollow feeling, at that point in time, it felt like the whole world was being torn away from me. My entire body went numb, my mind went blank, I felt dead, and I sure wanted to be too. I layed on the cold ground, the snowflakes slowly falling, as if they were trying to bury me along with everything else around me. I would've been dead, had Gram not come out looking for me. She helped me up and carried me back inside where I was warmed up and brought back to a living state. I filled Gram in on everything that had happened, and she looked at me, sadly, sympatheticly, like I was just some hopeless girl who needed a knight in shining armour. I hated it. As the next week's went on I became more and more angry with myself, and soon started lashing out, throwing things, breaking things, screaming.. I tried multiple times to get ahold of Sam, but all I was ever told was that he was married to the woman, and they were expecting a child, so soon after the marriage, after him, I never left the house, even after Gram died, I didn't attend the funeral. I've been alone since that night at the barn, I never got to say anything to anyone about how I've felt, and soon I'm gonna die. But before I do.. Sam if you're reading this... Goodbye.
