Summary

“And indeed, We created man from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud.”

“And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire.”

(The Holy Qur’an; Al-Hijr; 15:26-27)

“And indeed they knew that the buyers of it (magic) would have no share in the Hereafter. And how bad indeed was that for which they sold their ownselves, if they but knew.”

(The Holy Qur’an; Al-Baqarah; 2:102)

The huge Woods behind The Black Woods Boarding School are known to be cursed since centuries. No one knows the exact reason behind it and no one tries to know because whoever steps into the woods, doesn’t come back ever, as cliché as it may sound!

Firyal Bushr has been studying in the school since freshman year. Being the daughter of the principal of the school, she’s well aware of the long list of rules and regulations in there. She’s lived all the eighteen years of her life under absolute imprisonment, abiding by the rules always. She hasn’t or won’t ever dare to cross her limit and break the rules.

That is until...

Raghid Al-Hakam has to finish his senior year in The Black Woods! To him, the old damned boarding is nothing but absolute boredom with lots of boring rules, the most important one of them being that no student can step into the woods behind the school.

Being an absolute rule-breaker and a carefree guy, Raghid not only breaks the rules of the Black Woods High School, but also the rules of Firyal’s life!

***

Two extremely powerful verses from The Holy Qur’an!

The mighty warning in The Holy Qur’an!

Spirits and souls!

Witches and wizards!

Magic and sorcery!

And a tale of breaking the rules!

Where will all this ultimately lead to?

“Freedom...

Something I’ve highly desired and craved for, throughout my life.

There’s this one thing in everyone’s life... The one thing that they’ve always wanted but can never have. To me, that one thing is freedom. The thing I’ve always wanted, but can never have.

I envy the birds that can fly freely in the vast blue sky. They know no boundaries, no dividing lines, nothing at all. They can breathe in the fresh air, just spread their wings and go wherever they wish to!

I envy the carefree writers who have the freedom to sit at a serene place — by the lakeside or in a small, cozy coffeeshop — and lose themselves in a world of their own, a world where only they and their beautiful words, that have been gifted to them by Allah, exist.

I envy the easygoing artists who can sit outside on the porch, watching the falling snow and capturing it on a sheet of paper, even when their hands are freezing. Or sit on a huge cliff and capture the view of the whole city on a small sheet of paper, even when they have a fear of heights!

I envy the colourful butterflies who have the freedom to enjoy the beauty of all the blossoms, all the flowers. Who have the freedom to play hide and seek in the beauties and greeneries of the seasons of Spring and Summer.

I envy the lovers who just elope to a place of their own, far away from the people that don’t let them be together due to some stupid rules this society has framed. I envy the freedom Allah gifts them by means of their love.

To me, freedom is being crazy, being weird, not having to care about what others think of you because you won’t taste it until you stop giving a damn about the damned rules of this society!

You won’t taste it until you break the rules, oh no wait, let me correct myself... You won’t taste it until you step onto the rules and trample them under your feet and let go... Just let go of all the fears!

You won’t taste it until you have the strength to pluck up the courage and stand firmly against the whole world!

The strength I want to have so that I could taste the very sweet nectar of freedom.

I want to have the freedom of the birds, the carefree writers, the easygoing artists, the butterflies and the lovers, altogether!

The only problem is that, it’s something I can’t have.

Something I can’t have.”

Letting out a deep sigh, she puts the pen down and looks towards the window, gazing out at a few birds near the flower plants. She feels her eyes getting watery and blinks immediately, reminding herself that she’s sitting inside the school library.

She can’t cry right now.

“Firyal?”

On hearing her name being called, she averts her gaze away from the birds and looks up at her friend, Asrar.

“Yeah?”

“The Principal wants to see you.”

Firyal stands up, closing the notebook on which she had been writing before a few minutes “Why?”

“I don’t know,” Asrar shrugs her shoulders “You should go and check out yourself.”

Firyal gives her a nod “Alright.”

Walking out of the library with Asrar following behind, Firyal makes her way towards her father’s office, slightly worried.

Why did he need to see her this early in the morning?
