Hi. My name is Abagail Lynn Bailey. This...is my story about my first summer romance.
His name was Shane Lance Gregory. He was my moon and I was his stars. He held the key to my heart for that short period of time that we had been in love. Shane had wonderful dark brown, almost black hair that was curly as can be and flowed ever so perfectly above his beautiful bright blue eyes. Oh, those eyes.  Every time I looked into them I fell deeper and deeper into what seemed like a trance type state. It was like you could just swim in them, they were so perfect. Everything about him was perfect. He was just the right height for me and he was muscular too. His muscles made me weak every time he held me close in his arms. I would listen to his heart beat and just let the whole world fade away.
We met at the beginning of summer. I was on a vacation with my best friend and her family. We went to the beach and swam for a while before I saw him. He was so cute. My heart started racing. I kept trying to see him while I was swimming and I got caught by a wave. I had trouble trying to get up for air. The water was strong and kept pulling me under. I got pulled into a deep part of the water and was still getting dunked, but someone saw me. Someone saw me drowning. I heard the voice calling, "Wait, wait, I'm coming to help you. Don't worry." It was a male voice, a deep burly voice. I didn't really care who it was at this point, I just wanted to be able to take a breath without getting yanked back under water by the strength of the waves that was strong enough to push a surfer to shore.
The voice finally caught up to me and the waves. The voice told me to stay calm. He was going to help me. Everything was going to be okay. I got pulled up. I felt the presence of a hand pulling my arm and saw the shore getting closer and closer. There was a crowd of people, my best friend included, with worried expressions on their faces. We got to shore and I was laid don on the warm, soft sand. A figure appeared above me. When my vision cleared up from all of the salt water in my eyes, I saw him. It was Shane. He was the voice who saved me. He leaned over me and asked me if I was okay. I told him, "Yes, I'm okay, but I would like to know how I can repay my hero."
He said, "How about you say yes to a date with me pretty woman?"
I couldn't help but to smile and say, "Well, of course I would. You saved my life, It's the least I could do."
He helped me up and said, "Where are you staying? I'll pick you up at nine."
"Over near the strip mall, in a beach house. It's a pink one, you can't miss it."
He laughed. "Okay, I can't wait." He walked  off and started talking with his friends.
My best friend, Rebecca, asked about my "near death experience". I told her what had happened and she started interrogating me about "Mr. Hottie" whom I had gotten a date with. I gave her the details, but told her that he had not yet mentioned his name, and nor had I.
When I saw him later that night, my long blonde hair was curled and up in a messy, but cute bun and I was wearing a cute pink sundress  with white and blue flowers on it. He knocked on the door and when I opened it, his now dried hair was flopped to the side oh so perfectly and he was wearing a white button-up shirt and a par on blue jeans. He looked so perfect, so handsome.
He took me out to a restaurant called Fudpuckers. It was really cool. The had alligators everywhere, we even took a picture with one and fed another using a fishing rod with no hook so that we wouldn't hurt it. The food was really good too, a little expensive, but good. He wouldn't let me pay for anything, but he did tell me what his name was this time. When he said it, it sounded so adorable, maybe even a little sexy. His adorable southern accent made it so much better. I told him my name too, and when he repeated it back to me, I thought I had just melted and turned into a puddle.
We went back down to the beach for a walk when it got dark and no one was there. It was so romantic. He would keep "accidentally" bumping into me until at one point, he slowly slid his fingers between mine and held my hand. He made my heart pound, I had never felt this way before, but I liked it. He told me about himself. Things like where he lived, which was in Georgia, what sports he played in school, and more. I told him things about me too. We had a lot in common, like our love for animals. He was applying to college to go into the veterinary field and become and veterinary technician. I thought that was adorable.
When he dropped me off at the beach house, Becky was waiting outside for me by the pool. She told him to stay and hang out with us, but he had to go back to the hotel before they locked the doors. She asked me about the date and I told her every detail, including the part that I didn't mention before about him showing me a scar he had on the back f his shoulder from a car accident he had gotten into when he was younger. I couldn't wait to see him the next day at the beach, so I went to sleep,
When I woke up, Becky was already at the beach, so I went down there. There was a crowd of people standing around the lifeguard stand, so I ran over to see what the big deal was. It was Becky. She was bleeding everywhere and her parents were still sleeping, so I had no one to call other than Shane. He luckily was already there and ran over to help me. She had gotten bit by something. Shane drove us to the nearest hospital to help her. She had to get seventeen stitches in her leg, but she was fine.
Shane started to drive us bak to the beach house, but instead took us to The Backroad, which was a "haunted" backroad in a city nearby where we were staying. He helped Becky get around so that I wouldn't have to worry about it. Shane walked us around and showed us the road and laughed as we screamed at the things that we heard or thought we had seen. When he took us back, we were petrified, but still laughing at ourselves. We knew it was fake, but it still scared us.
Shane, Becky, and I all sat out by the pool at the beach house and laughed and talked all night. Shane ended up sleeping over with us, but don't worry, he slept downstairs on the couch, not with me. He told us stories about his childhood and his family. We told him about our friendship and our silly adventures as children. Everything was perfect.
When I woke up, Shane had just shut my door and looked over at me, holding a tray full of food. He told me, "Good Morning Sunshine, I made you some pancakes and bacon with eggs and extra chocolate chips in the pancakes. Oh yeah, and orange juice to drink." I smiled and said, " You are so sweet Shane, thank you."
"You're welcome darling, but don't tell Becky or her parents, I only made enough for the two of us."
"Our little secret." We both laughed.
We haven't known each other that long, but I think I'm already falling for him. I don't ever want summer to end. He's just such an amazing person. Becky agreed with me.
He took us out that same night to go get dinner, granted we only went to Wendy's, but it was still good. We all got along so well. We went to the beach after we ate. It was getting dark out so the stars were shining and the moon's reflection was glimmering on the water. Everything was just perfect. I couldn't wait to kiss him again. That was when he leaned in ever so slowly and gently touched his lips on mine, and even though we were kissing, I couldn't help but smile, which made him smile too. He grabbed my waist very gently and pulled me closer to him until my chest was touching him, and he continued to kiss me softly.
We seemed to have forgotten that Becky was with us, because she said, "Bailey, Shane, get a room." We felt bad and stopped kissing. Our beautiful moment ended so suddenly. We walked back to the beach house and Shane went back to his hotel tonight. I couldn't wait to see what the next day had in store for me.
I was woken up by my phone ringing. It was Shane. He said something happened and he couldn't come see me today. I didn't know what had happened, but I asked him if he'd want me to go with him and he said no. This must have been serious. Me and Becky went to the strip mall and he was all I could think about. I just wanted to know if Shane was okay. My phone rang again. It wasn't Shane, it was some out of state number, but I answered anyways in hopes that it was him, but it wasn't. There was a grim sounding deep voice on the other end that said, "Your little boyfriend got himself in trouble, so you're getting dragged down with him." The phone hung up, but I didn't pay any mind to it. Whoever it was didn't know me or what I look like or where I was so I would be fine, but what about Shane.
I kept thinking about him, but I couldn't tell Becky what the caller had said to me. She'd go crazy, so I just let her take me to the beach. We were swimming and everything was normal...until I got dragged down. Maybe that what the caller meant when he said I'd get dragged down with Shane.  I couldn't breathe and I was flailing my arms and legs trying to save myself, but it wasn't helping me at all. Shane wasn't here to save me this time.
This time was different, I wasn't getting dunked by waves, I just kept getting deeper and deeper in the water, and something was pulling me. Or someone. I finally got some air, but it was in some creepy submarine. I didn't like the look of things. Next thing I know I was getting tied to a chair by a man in a black hood. I wasn't going to let that happen to me, so I reached my arm forward with everything I had and punched him. He fell to the ground and I untied myself and started yelling for Shane. This submarine was pretty big. I finally heard his voice. He was handcuffed to a pole in a closet. luckily I remember I was wearing bobby pins, so I took one out and picked the lock on the cuffs. Me and Shane an from the man who was now awake. We found the exit and opened the hatch. Water flooded in and covered the man in the black hood. We swam for our lives. Swimming as hard as e could we finally reached the top of the water. There was  a boat. They saw us and helped us. They called the police and we told the police what had happened. I had saved Shane's life and we left a man for dead in a submarine at the bottom of the ocean.
It had been a rough day for the two of us so we both headed back to the beach house and laid in my bed and feel right to sleep after changing into dry clothes. Becky came in and tried to wake us up but we were deep in sleep.
When we woke up the next day, neither one of us wanted to go back to the beach. We went for a walk on the boardwalk instead. It was peaceful and relaxing. We did no shopping and no eating, just walking and talking. He kept asking me if I was okay and every time he asked I told him that I wasn't the one handcuffed to a pole for who knows how long. We eventually got to a point where we could laugh at the situation. He told me the man who kidnapped us was a kid he used to go to school with that never really liked him, I don't see how because he's just so perfect.
Our long walk all the way up and down the boardwalk finally ended late at night and our talk had continued all the way back to the beach house. I wish Shane would've stayed again, but he headed back to his hotel room. We had both had an exhausting couple of days and just wanted some time off. When I walked inside Becky was already sleeping, but I stayed up a little longer to watch a couple of movies. I finally crashed around two on the couch.
I dreamt of the experience with the man in the submarine. I dreamed that the submarine was found, but he was not in it. I woke up in fear, but fell back asleep only for the same dream to continue. He swam to the shore and got himself up and walking. Shane and I were out in the dream, but he somehow managed to find us and take us again. This time he took us to some building and was going to kill us. Right before he had the chance to kill us I woke up to Shane shaking me and yelling my name. It was six o'clock in the evening. He said, "Are you okay baby? You were mumbling in your sleep. Something about someone trying to kill you?"
I said, "Oh. Yeah. I dreamed that the man came back and tried to kill us."
"Baby, don't worry about him. He's gone. Let's get you some food. You've been asleep an awful long time." We went out to get some waffles from Waffle House. I got chocolate chip waffles, cheesy hash browns, and orange juice. After we had finished eating we skipped out on the beach. It was already almost eight o'clock. We just went back to the beach house and swam in the pool. We tried to watch a movie, but we ended up falling asleep.
It is now July and less than a month until the end of summer, which means less than a month until me and Shane had to part. The more I thought about it, the more saddened I got. I tried not to think about it, but somehow, it kept creeping into my mind. I sat there waiting for Shane to wake up, sulking in my sadness, thinking about having to go back home to my sad little town to be without my lover. When Shane finally awaken, he frightened me. He immediately started speaking, which I was not expecting. He said, "Hey beautiful, what's wrong? You look sad."
I told him, "Well...the summer is coming to an end quicker than I wanted it to. I don't want this to en, I don't want us to end."
"Don't think about that baby girl. Everything will be okay. I promise."
"How can you promise that if we live so far from each other, Shane!"
"Don't raise your voice at me! I told you everything will be okay! I'm a man of my word and if I say it will be okay, then it will be okay Abby. I promise I will find a way to make this work."
"Okay fine. I just. I don't. I don't want to lose you Shane, okay."
"I promise it will be okay, I will make it work."
I started crying and he jumped across the couch to hold me. He tried to make me feel better, and it worked, but just like that, our first fight started and ended, almost in the blink of an eye.  I kept thinking about it. Would everything really be okay? How would he make it work out? I had really hoped that everything would be okay. I tried to stop thinking about it, but again, I failed.
Shane went out for a run, and when he came back I had fallen back asleep. He woke me up and asked what I wanted to do. I wanted to do something fun and adventurous, so I told him we should go zip-lining. I was going to ask Becky if she wanted to go, but she had already disappeared for the day, and her parents left a week ago to go home.
We changed clothes and set out to head to the zip-lining course out in the woods somewhere. It looked crazy fun when we got there. It just looked like people were dropping from mid-air and flying across the trees. I couldn't wait. We payed and signed the waivers that they had then put on our harnesses and went through the mini training session. Once we got on the course it was a blast. Of course, with me being the dare devil that I am, I took all of the expert courses, at one point I felt like I was going to fall, but I caught my footing and kept going, crossing through the trees, flying through the sky. It was so much fun. I would do that for the rest of my life if it was a possibility. I wanted to go through again, but Shane said it was getting late, and he was right, but it was just so much fun. In fact, it was so much fun, I googled zip line courses close to home. I wanted to try to get a job at one.
Shane and I left and went to the nearest grocery store to buy tomato soup and the stuff to make grilled cheese. When we got back, Shane made the soup and i cooked the grilled cheeses, enough for Becky, Shane, and I. We also got the stuff to make sundaes for dessert and crepes with strawberries and peaches for breakfast. I was just in a cooking mood, and it seemed like Shane was in the mood to help me. We waited for Becky to get back to start making everything, but she never made it home. We tried calling, but her phone was off. We walked to the beach and she wasn't there. She walked in the door close to midnight and Shane started the soup while I talked to Becky to make sure she was okay. She was fine, she just went out to drink. Becky helped me make the grilled cheese, then we all ate. Once we finished, we all still had room for dessert so Shane and I brought out the sundae bar and some bowls and we all dug in. We were all stuffed after, so we decided to go for a walk to try to make ourselves feel better, and it worked, so once we wore off some of the food we headed off to the beach for a swim.
We swam for hours on end until we realized that it was four in the morning. We headed back to the beach house and skipped getting showers until the morning and laid down for the night. When Becky and I finally woke up, Shane had just finished cooking the crepes, he even made them al a mode, which tasted amazing. I told Becky about the trip to the zip line course and she decided she wanted to try, so Shane and I agreed to go again. Shane drove and we all had a blast, even though Becky screamed for the first half of it. We kept telling her to stop looking down, but she just wouldn't listen. I t was kind of funny, at least Shane and I thought so. Becky ended up laughing too, well, as best as she could with having no voice from all of her screaming.
Shane drove us back to the beach house for lunch. He had bought lunch meat for us to make sandwiches for lunch and dinner today. Becky and I had ham, but Shane wanted turkey on his. once we had finished eating, we headed to the boardwalk. We didn't want to shop or do anything. We just wanted to walk. Once we got tired or walking, we decided to go to the water park that was nearby. There were lots of rides there, including one where the floor dropped out from under you. I did that one a few times. Becky did it twice and Shane didn't want to ride that once so he sat at the bottom and watched me go down it on the little television screens that they had. He thought it was funny how I screamed every time the floor dropped. When I got out the last time he said, "Abby girl. You screamed every time. You've got a very bloody Mary sounding scream, but it's kind of adorable." I laughed.
Becky and I went back home and Shane drove off for a while, but came back in time for dinner, but Becky and I had already eaten and fallen asleep for a nap. He woke me up when he finished eating and told me to change and meet him by the pool. I changed and went outside to see him in the pool waiting for me to get there. He was sitting on the stairs in the pool just string at me with the most adorable smile on his face, his sexy blue eyes locking with my bright green eyes. He wad watching the wind run through my blonde hair. He yelled, "Get your short self over here, girl."
I told him, "Hey. I am not that short, Shane."
"Yes you are."
"No. Five foot two inches is not that short."
"Yes it is."
I walked over to the pool and exclaimed, "Quit making fun of my height stretch."
He pulled me into the pool and said, "What did you call me?"
"You heard me, stretch."
"You want to fight today girl?"
I splashed him. "I sure do."
Next thing you know, our words stopped and a whole lot of splashing started. I thought it was kind of adorable. We were cute together, and he agreed. We were having so much fun until we got rudely interrupted by Becky who came to tell us that someone was at the door. We got out of the pool and wrapped in our towels and when we got to the door, there was a man standing there. He was short and stubby. He was wearing a suit, so we thought it was professional business. "How's it going sir," said Shane.
"Pretty good for me, but I have some news, "the man said. He looked at me and said, "You must be Abagail."
"Yes sir," I said.
"I have so not so good news, would you like to step into a different room or are you okay with your friends hearing?"
"They can listen. It's okay."
"We were just informed to tell you that there was an accident. Your parents are in the hospital."
"Wait, what happened?"
"They were in a car accident. They seem to be okay, but here is the hospital's number. They were asking to speak with their daughter."
" Thank you so much sir, I'll call them right away."
"Have a good day." I closed the door and ran to find my phone. When I found it I called the hospital and they put my parents on the phone. They just wanted me to know that they are okay and they would be home soon. I sighed in gratefulness that my parents were okay. My mama had a broken leg and my papa was just a little bruised with a couple of scratches. I was relieved.
Shane offered to take me to see them, but I was on vacation and they were fine. Even though we were close, because i didn't go far from home, I still didn't want to carve my time off to go home if everything was fine. I know it sounds selfish, but I didn't see it as necessary. If I was across the world, I couldn't just make my flight two weeks earlier over a few bruises and a broken arm, so I stayed.
I walked down to the beach on my own to go for a walk. Shane was apparently looking for me for a while because when he finally found me, he looked really worried and sounded a little panicky. He said he had been looking for me to make sure I was okay, but I was fine. I was perfectly fine...except for one thing. I only had two weeks left. After that, I would have to leave Shane.
Two weeks later, I finally realized that it was time to leave. I had to go home. I was ready to go home. Shane came over to take me to the beach one last time. Afterwards we walked the boardwalk and he bought us both keychains. Mine had his name on it and his had my name on it, that way we would always remember each other. It was adorable. He took me out to Fudpuckers again, because that was also our first date. We sat for a while and talked before we went back to the beach house to get Becky and say our goodbyes. He told me that he promised he would try to see me. I gave him one last kiss and we said our goodbyes. Becky and I left. It wasn't easy to do, but it was something that I would have to do. I would move on eventually.
Becky and I finally got home. It was a rough day for me so when I got inside, I got a shower and went to bed. When I woke up I had a visitor. It was a new friend. My parents got me a puppy. I named him Shane. I was happy to be home, but I really missed Shane. Like all love is, you will move on eventually. We were just in high school after all. That is the story of my...Summer Love.
