“Every man should keep a fair sized cemetery in which to bury the faults of his friends.” Henry Ward would overlook his friends personality flaws and see the good in his peers. Nobody is flawless, and we all have imperfections. It is attainable to overlook a flaw because we are only human.

In other words, we were all born to experience, other more than others. Through these experiences, we make mistakes in which forms us into what we are. These mistakes can change us physically and mentally. Why would someone be belittled over their flaws due to their experiences in life? We are all born with blemishes, big or small. For instance, my biggest flaw is the incapability of being able to love others. I've personally experienced abuse in a relationship of four years which caused a lot of change and conflict in my life. This caused me to gain trust issues and become more selfish than selfless. Regardless of it all, my friends overlook my flaws and accept me for who I am. They were able to look over the fact that I cannot express love like most people can.

Secondly, what someone focuses on, grows. If a person focuses on the positive characteristics of a person, they will begin to admire every flaw, regardless of what it is. If they concentrate on all of the negative of a person, then they will learn to despise it continuously. When someone is focused on picking out blemishes on people, they will eventually do it on every single person, possibly even themselves. What is focused on, grows, not just in the heart and mind, but to others as well. In example of this would be the characters Miss. Havisham from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Miss. Havisham was not able to overlook the flaws of men ever since she was left at the alter. She chooses to overlook these flaws and acts upon them negatively. Miss. Havisham does not allow herself to see the differences in all men, so her negativity grows in her heart, causing to her to brainwash her adopted daughter into thinking the same. The same thoughts Miss. Havisham had, were then put into Estella’s head, causing her to be negative as well. This shows how it does not only impact the person themselves, but the people they surround themselves with as well.

Lastly, if one cannot look through these flaws, it can possibly set higher standards on their relationships with other people. If a person is able to avoid the physical characteristics of a person, being able to overlook personality flaws should be simple to do as well. Nobody is going to be flawless and trying to change the way a person acts will only cause this person to become someone they are truly not. As in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby has many personality flaws. Two of them happen to be that he lives in the past, and everything he does is for Daisy, because he is in love, and somewhat obsessed. Nick was able to overlook his character flaws simply because he is a very close friend of his. Instead of setting higher standards for the people around him, he continues to have connection with Gatsby, for the friendship.

Overall, there are many reasons someone can overlook the serious character flaws of someone. It gains relationships, a more positive life, and lower standards. If someone is easily able to judge, then they should be easily be able to ignore character flaws.  If we can cover up blemishes on skin with makeup, then personality flaws should be able to be covered up as well. So, all in all, it is possible to overlook serious character flaws in others.
