The Mourning Tree

Beaten down and heartsick,
The ancient oak is bent,
As if in prayer
Over the brooding lake.
Wind has ravaged its back,
Rain has pelted its roots;
Locals call it the Mourning Tree.
For every day at dawn
The leaves weep over purple water,
Grieving the loss of the stars.
Countless hands have touched its trunk
Both for comfort and to comfort.
Some whisper names of loved ones lost,
Others listen for their own
Among the creaking branches.
More still hear nothing,
Content to kneel in the company
Of the ancient Mourning Tree.

Sentinel Willow

A willow stands vigil
At the edge of the lake.
The reeds embrace the roots,
And the leaves kiss the water;
Branches bent by the weight of spring
Caress the minnows and the sand.

Second Home

I see stars on the waves
And hear owls on the wind.
Summer anchors the air to my skin;
The lake fills my lungs
As the sand clutches my feet.
Heady blossoms and smooth grasses;
Cool waters and warm grounds.

Sunk

I would not say I am sinking;
While I am drowning, I am not at peace.
The water surrounds and holds me,
But it is as though its grip is waning.
I move faster; bubbles flicker upward.
I am not sinking. I am falling.
