When I was a child

I made a robot out of

Egg boxes and paper tubes.

I believed that if I wanted it

And wished it enough

Then it would happen,

My robot would move,

Would come to life.

I watched excited

Waiting hoping.

Nothing happened.

My machine was still.

Other boys mocked

My creation and

Ridiculous notion.

And so I tossed my robot

Into the rubbish.

My robot returned to

Paper and cardboard.

Now over thirty years on

I have a feeling that

I’d been right in the first place.
