Walking In Your Shoes

Until I walked in your shoes

ADA were just three letters

Until I walked in your shoes

I never knew the frustration,

The aggravation,

The inner anger

When someone had to read a menu to you

Until I walked in your shoes

I never knew about the acting

That came along with conversations

The smiling and the nodding

Because you didn't want to ask someone

To repeat their sentence again

A sentence to you that was garbled and useless

Until I walked in your shoes

I never noticed the subtle condensation,

The pity,

The half-humanness

That could drip from a person's voice

Their every word

From a person who doesn't understand

And doesn't care to understand

Until I walked in your shoes

I didn't understand the invisibility

That can take over society

When you are out with others

Than a thinking

Breathing

Person

Until I walked in your shoes

I didn't understand the need for a cane

If you could walk just fine without one

The silence of the aching back

Or the bone numbing exhaustion

Were foreign to me

The price paid for life

  Without this outer mark

Of my inner disability

Most importantly

Until I walked in your shoes

I never understood the importance of good friends

Amazing loved ones

Who embrace the whole person

Who are not crippled by the cane,

Are deaf to the hearing loss,

And blind to the visual difficulties

People who instead

Embrace the whole person I am

And continue to be

Those who share my journey

Laugh along with me

Drag me out of my funks

While reminding me

And insisting to others

Through their words and actions

That I too am part of this world

An equal

We all are

And so may we all learn as we walk in our shoes

and move our society forward

Through each of our individual steps
